An Open Letter From the Executive Director
Dear SA Athletics Community,
I'm writing in regards to the upcoming Adelaide Track Classic, to be held at Santos Stadium on Saturday 28th January. It's been seven years since a grand prix style elite athletics meet has been held in Adelaide. In terms of the development of athletics in South Australia, I have a strong belief that events such as the Adelaide Track Classic are important in terms of affording young athletes the chance to see athletes like World Champion Sally Pearson in action and also in raising the local profile of track and field. As you may be aware, the SA Government has refused to financially support this event. In contrast, Athletics Australia has fully backed the capacity of Athletics SA to deliver a world class athletics event.
In lieu of Government support, Athletics SA made a bold decision to underwrite the required costs for producing the Adelaide Track Classic. The financial guarantee we have put up is significant. Thankfully, we have been able to secure fantastic support from a number of sponsors to help offset costs. Thanks must go to Crowne Plaza Adelaide, Vilis, City Bay Fun Run Trust, City of West Torrens, and be active, along with our media partners Fiveaa and In Daily.
Whilst the support from these organisations has been important, what is absolutely critical is that the South Australian athletics community supports the event by coming along on Saturday 28th of January. As a not-for-profit organisation, all of Athletics SA's funds ultimately belong to our member clubs and registered participants, so your support is vital to ensure the financial success of the event and of our organisation.
Importantly, Athletics SA wants to ensure that this becomes an annual event. In order for this to occur, we need to show Athletics Australia, our sponsors, and the state Government that South Australians want to see elite athletics live in Adelaide. This is my appeal to you to come along with your family and friends to see some world class athletics and support your organisation.
