Professional Development Program For Athletic Coaches



The South Australian Branch of the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association is pleased to present the first in a series of Professional Development Seminars. The August and first seminar is aimed at High Performance Coaches and Athletes, but is open and very relevant to developing and new coaches:

 

ERGOGENIC AIDS AND SUPPLEMENTS, AND NUTRITION FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE

PRESENTED BY:     PITRE BOURDON – SASI Physiologist and

                                     OLIVIA WARNES – SASI Sports Dietician

CONTENT:    Pitre will provide you with the latest in mechanical aids to athletic performance and food related supplements whilst Olivia will present current advice on correct nutrition and diet for high performance. (Presenters’ profiles overleaf)

VENUE: The auditorium, South Australian Institute of Sport, Valetta Road, Kidman Park starting at 6.30pm on Wednesday 8th August, 2007 – Car parking is available

COST: $5.00 entry fee for member of ATFCA and $10 for non members.

Future Seminars and Workshops

 
In September, the Branch, as part of this scheme, recommends that you consider attending the ATFCA National Coaching Conference from Basics to Beijing on 28 – 30 September 2007 based at the SAPOL Academy at Fort Largs. Refer to ATFCA website for details and the closing date is 17th August 2007.
 

In October, we are back at SASI for a Recovery Workshop which will include a tour and discussion about the SASI facilities and how you can aid recovery at your sites with SASI Physiologist - Greg Rowsell about the recovery interventions session and Paul Scott, a Masseur on soft tissue therapy.

 
And looking further forward in November, Sprints or Middle distance (Programming/training interventions) with Peter Fortune and/ or Steve Ovett
 

In February 2008, Sprints and relays (Program planning/periodisation/training interventions with Cliff Mallett .

May 2008, Jumps (training interventions/plyometrics) Gary Bourne or Max Debnam.

Presenters’ profiles:
 
Pitre Bourdon is currently the Manager, Sport Science with the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI). He has worked at SASI for over 20 years providing and co-ordinating Sport Science support to elite athletes. He completed a B.Ed with Honours and MA at the Flinders University of South Australia, and recently submitted his PhD at The University of South Australia. His main research interests have been the application of blood lactate measures to endurance sport, testing elite athletes, effects of altitude on performance, and nutritional supplements.
 

Olivia Warnes is a Dietitian, who completed a Nutrition & Dietetics degree at Flinders University in 2002 and a further education course in Sports Nutrition through Deakin University in 2004.  She worked in the Base Hospital in Hamilton, Victoria, as a Clinical Dietitian for two years.  In 2005 she was successful in obtaining the Gatorade Fellowship in Sports Nutrition at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.  During this time she worked with elite level athletes and junior development sports in Men’s Soccer and Men’s Basketball.  She returned to Adelaide at the end of 2005 and is currently working at Flinders Medical Centre as a Clinical Dietitian, as a private practitioner at Sportsmed SA and is the Sports Dietitian at the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI).  Olivia is also the consultant Dietitian for Port Adelaide Football Club (AFL), Adelaide 36ers and Adelaide Lightning Basketball Clubs, AIS Track Cycling and AIS Beach Volleyball.
