50th Reunion

After several months of planning by John Pearce and his committee, the club celebrated its 50th Anniversary on Saturday October 23. Following the success of the All Schools Championships that were held on St Alban’s Reserve, Enfield members – past and present – gathered at the clubrooms to see the club’s current facilities in action.

The history of the previous 50 years’ of our club was displayed, showcasing the amazing evolution of the grounds and clubrooms, and the numerous athletes that
have competed for the club, and State, and Nation. The hungry guests then ventured down to the Clearview Bowling Club to feast on a buffet and be entertained by MC Phil Saredakis with a night of amusing commentary and interviews of significant and successful members, current and past.

There were ‘guess the amount’ jelly beans and peanut m&m’s to be won, and coaches to be thanked by former athletes, even a ‘short’ speech by John Pearce;
who was roundly acknowledged for his untiring efforts and determination in tracking down members from far and wide,…even from Geraldton WA!

John lamented the apologies of many who would have loved to be with us but circumstances prevented. There was even a message of congratulations for the club from Herb Elliott, shared with those present by founding member Gary Adair.

Many humorous, and some poignant tales were told, reflecting the proud and colourful heritage of our club, and the part Athletics played in many people’s lives over these 50 years.

The final segment of the evening was a ceremonial cake cutting back at the clubrooms, with the Mayor, Gary Johanson doing the honours in the presence of some of our past presidents.

Special thanks go to Ron Young for his fantastic archival display of ‘down memory lane’, in particular picture display of the clubs creation to the club today – wow how things have come along. Plans continue to be laid for publishing the club history, and of course the next Reunion. Keep October 2015 free!
