Two new winners in tuna toss

A HUGE crowd saw two new winners in the Tuna Toss on Sunday and both have a local connection.

Men's winner Matt Staunton of Adelaide has family in Port Lincoln while the female winner, Brenda Wilkins, is originally from Tumby Bay.

While no records were broken, Mr Staunton tossed the tuna a solid 22.16 metres after coming second in the event last year to professional hammer thrower Darren Billet.

The next longest throw was from David Dixon of Adelaide with a toss of 20.45 metres.

Mr Staunton said he hoped to win the tuna toss for his grandma, who lives in Port Lincoln, and get the Staunton name on the shield.

He said he saw his first tuna toss when he was about six and would definitely come back for Tunarama's 50th birthday next year.

"I also talked Darren into going to a national hammer throwing competition which helped a bit," he said.

Meanwhile, the women's winner Brenda Wilkins was a first time tuna toss entrant and entered only because her niece nagged her too.

She won with a throw of 8.5 metres and said her tuna toss technique was a combination of softball and casting a fishing line.

"I think the technique comes down to keeping your feet planted, turn as fast as you can and don't get too dizzy on the way around."

Ms Wilkins said the real tuna was easier to toss than the plastic and she hoped to return for the 50th next year to defend her title.

"It really is a lot of fun, the competitors are a lot more nervous than the crowd I can tell you that," she said.
