Nothing excites the EH Throw crowd more than finals time. Nothing that is apart from the oh so sexy EH BBQ! Masterchief’s Leon McNamara and Lauren Foote were on hand to get the action sizzling, but this BBQ was even more exciting than usual. How can this possibly be I hear you ask? The EH BBQ is the sexiest machine in the southern hemisphere… For those of you how missed out on the live action, contain your self with this post sneak peak. Not only was the EH BBQ cooking up snags, but also it was cooking up burgers and steaks! Amazing and devilishly delicious! Just when we thought the EH BBQ couldn’t reach any loftier heights, it scales Mt Everest. Damn hot; damn sexy; EH BBQ.

After many months of fierce EH Throw competition, it was the first of the finals series. The contestants have battled out the throws over 6 months and who could forget the carefully crafted competitions that lead us to this point:

  • June EH Throw – Battle for the chocky frog
  • July EH Throw – Mud Put
  • August EH Throw – Side Show Alley: Cone Death
  • September EH Throw – 2UP
  • October EH Throw – Spring Racing: Chase the Champ
  • Movember EH Throw – Chase the Champ: Revenge of the Champ

January EH Throw was the final for the shot put. This competition would decide the EH Throw champion shot putter. No handicaps, no mucking around, just brute strength and technique. Prizes on offer for January EH Throw would go to the shot put. 1st $70, 2nd Berlin World Championship bag (kindly donated by Claire Woods) and 3rd $30.

Event one for the night was the Hammer Throw. In a modest field, Darren Billett (open) threw 64.69m to win the competition, followed by Mr Tunarama 2010, Matt Staunton (035) 49.29m and Luke Richards (U18) finished third with 45.32m.

Event two was the EH Throw Shot Put Final. This competition would determine the EH Throw Shot Put Champion. The competition was shaping up to be a hotly contested event, with Wayne Willis and Elias Arcondoulis in top form in recent competitions. Gary and Charlene Thompson (new competitors to EH Throws) were both warming up to be contenders for the top prize.  Other tight competitions included Enfield Harriers’ Kelly Zanker & Kylie Montgomery who were both chasing the elusive 10m mark and David Bates / Bob Hunter who were after that coveted prize of Top Grunter!

Staunton first up throwing the ‘Old Man Weight’ again set the target with a throw in the high 13’s, closely followed by Arcondoulis, who also opened with a solid throw out in the high 13's. Unfortunately, Willis fouled his opener, out on the right sector line. Zanker and Montgomery battled it out to get one out over 9m, and displaying rather dainty throws. The Thompson siblings were both settling into the EH Throws competition with a first round foul for Gary, while Charlene put one out in the high 9’s. Seasoned EH Throw competitor Luke Richards (having moved up to the 5kg shot), displayed his arm strength to put the shot out in the low 10’s. Bates and Hunter showed some style with puts out in the 6-8m mark; but more importantly with momentous grunts noted by all, with first round grunt going to Bates.
Second round saw Willis throw high 14’s, before a 15.29m in the 3rd round putting pressure back on Staunton and Arcondoulis. Both competitors responded in the 4th round with a 14.12m to Staunton and 14.50m to Arcondoulis (his 3rd open National Qualifier for the year).

Charlene Thompson continued to dominate the women’s competition, throwing 10.09m, which spurred on Zanker and Montgomery to break the 10m barrier; both falling shy with 9.45m and 9.36m respectively.

5th Round action included a long pause from Willis for a 15.08m put and an effortless 14.40m from Arcondoulis; while Staunton continued to be consistent over the 14m mark. Bates and Hunter’s puts continued to increase in intensity and so did their grunts. Hunter now showing some form in both, but Bates was elated with his 5th round effort getting over the 7m mark for the first time in competition and a new PB.
The shot put competition had it all, PB’s, hissy fits, fouls and most of all competitive and consistent throws from all involved. It was great to see the sportsmanship from all involved, with the competitors spurring each other on to get to their target. Final Results 1st Wayne Willis 15.29m, 2nd Elias Arcondoulis 14.50m, 3rd Matt Staunton 14.12m.

EH Shot Put Champion – Wayne Willis.

Event three for the night was the discus throw and it was an EH Throw pleasure to welcome blast from the past Steve Mugge out for a throw. Steve threw discus as a talented junior and was a previous senior SA state champion. Four years ago Steve gave up on the sport of athletics to pursue other interests. Thanks to good old facebook (perhaps it does have some small use…) Steve found out about EH Throw and decided to have a throw.

Zhalie Davies hoping to repeat her 43.07m from Doha, Qatar late last year opened with another 40m plus throw setting her up for a great competition. Steve Mugge uncertain of the circle and needing to dust off the cobwebs opened with a 38m plus standing throw. All eyes were hoping to see Steve unleash a 40m+ throw and a legendary grunt with a spin. It wasn’t until round 5 when Steve finally unleashed the 40.04 and then threw 40.48m on his last attempt. Unfortunately, the old Mugge lungs were kept quiet.

In the women’s competition, Kylie Montgomery battled to reach the 35m mark and was heard saying “If I don’t clear 35m I’m gonna be grumpy”. Unfortunately for Montgomery grumpy she was, finishing with 33.35m.

In the battle of the grunters Bob Hunter trounced David Bates once again with the loudest grunt and a throw of 26.37m.

Final placings 1st Matt Staunton (still on the Old Man Weights) 44.29m, 2nd Zhalie Davies 41.88m and 3rd Steve Mugge 40.48m.

Thank you lines men – Rosemary Billett, Graham Billett, Bob Hunter, Kym Richards, thank you ball boys – Leon McNamara, Lauren Foote, Russell Foote, Julie McNamara and Cheryl Miln.

Next EH Throw competition is February 25 - the EH Throw Hammer final.
