REVIEW
First split round for season
Wimmera Hockey Association held its first split round for the season last Saturday with four matches held at Kaniva while the other five were held at Dimboola Health and Fitness Centre, where Horsham Hockey Club is hosting its home matches this season.
Results of the round were as expected with no major upsets. Winter is on its way with a bitter cold wind and little rain making the conditions favourable for playing although various shelters were appreciated by spectators at both venues!
Juniors
Yanac Warriors enjoyed a good win over Dimboola Kookaburras 13-0 at Kaniva. The Kookaburras defended well and captain Lachlan Schultz did well for his side. Todd Alexander led the way for Warriors scoring twice, directing play from centre half back.
Kaniva Raiders were undermanned fielding 10 players and missing several of their older male players but the younger lineup was able to combat a keen Warrack Revengers lineup 3-1. Revengers scored first blood through Breanna Langman and this was the first score against Raiders this season. Towards the end of an even half Raiders were able to level the score. The unbeaten Raiders used their whole field well and sneaked in front in the second half. A goal from young full back Luke Shalders who was also named best, sealed the win. Jack Dean played a strong game for Revengers.
Nhill Leopards enjoyed a majority of the play in the first half of their match against Horsham Bombers on the turf at Dimboola with some great defence by Bombers keeping Leopards to a 2-goal lead at half time. A more even second half saw each team score once to finish 4-2 in favour of Leopards. Forward Blake Miller was instrumental for Leopards while centre half back Traiyth Leffler was strong for Bombers.
Dimboola Kangaroos picked up points from the bye.
Women
Yanac Women retain top spot on the women’s ladder after a fourth consecutive win with a solid 6-0 performance over Kaniva Women. Yanac were up four goals in the first half with classy play all over the field and plenty of chances. Kaniva on their home ground defended well keeping Yanac from doing more damage. Kaniva attacked a bit more in the second half, with one cross-goal giving Yanac a scare. Erin Alexander directed play from centre half back also scoring from a penalty stroke in the second half. Right half back Jessica Eadon stepped it up for Kaniva under lots of pressure.
On the turf at Dimboola, Horsham Highlanders and Nhill Thunderbirds played a close game. Horsham scored the first two but Nhill kept in touch through Sami Crowhurst with a running goal into the circle and around the goalie. In the second half Thunderbirds scored twice to take the lead but another two from Horsham gave them the 4-3 win. Centre half back Launa Schilling directed play for Highlanders, also scoring from a short corner, while Wendy Crowhurst put in another solid performance for Thunderbirds.
On the turf Warrack Women defended many shots by Dimboola Women who were only able to score once in the first half. Warrack were also able to score themselves from general play to make an even score at half time. Dimboola took more control of the game in the second half. Despite only getting into attack a couple of times Warrack converted once again, but four more from Dimboola sealed a 5-2 win which also sneaks them back into second spot on the ladder. Dimboola’s Elizabeth Klinge and Warrack’s Linley Arnold-Wardle shone for their sides.
Open
On the turf Horsham Hurricanes and Nhill Rangers each earned their first points and scored their first goals this season. Rangers took the lead with the first two goals but Hurricanes scored to keep in touch. Half back Stuart Hoffman playing on the field instead of goals this week scored a late goal to seal the 2-2 draw and was also named best for his side. Full back Mont Miller was reliable in defence for Rangers.
Yanac Tigers remain unbeaten and are the last team across all divisions who can still boast no goals scored against them this season, despite a valiant display by Kaniva Cobras who tend to play well against Tigers on their Kaniva home turf. The teams played a fiery match with lots of pace and hard hits, but despite plenty of attacking moves neither side was able to penetrate the other’s solid defence, finishing 0-0. Centre half back Clint Beattie shone for Cobras while full back Kim Croot was solid for Tigers.
Warrack Hoops sneak into top spot on the open ladder by a narrow one-goal-difference lead following a solid 6-0 win over Dimboola Men. Most of the forward play by Hoops saw goals spread across four players on the Dimboola turf. A shining moment in the second half was a good cross into Warrack’s attacking circle with a deflection in from the post by Barry Schilling. Hoops controlled the game which saw a little bit of rough play by both sides. Full back Darius Cosgrave was solid for Hoops while centre half Tim Jorgensen did well for Dimboola.
