CHONG WEI SEALED HIS SINGLES TITLE IN ABC 2006

LEE Chong Wei and veteran pair Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah gave hosts
Malaysia a satisfying end to the Asian Badminton Championships when they won the mens singles and doubles title in Johor Baru today.

Top seeded Chong Wei continued his brilliant run in the tournament when he beat Thailands Boonsak Ponsana 21-11, 21-16 in 35 minutes to clinch his first Asian crown. It was Chong Weis second title of the year after winning the Swiss Open title in January.

Tan Fook-Wan Wah also ended their barren run in the tournament after
overcoming stubborn compatriots Hoon Thien How-Tan Boon Heong with a  17-21, 21-11, 21-12 win in the final which lasted for 40 minutes. Tan Fook-Wan Wah were runners-up in 1997 and 2000 but made sure they did not
fail for the third time when they came back strongly after losing the first
game against world junior champions Thien How-Boon Heong.

Chong Wei, who won the Commonwealth Games mens singles gold in Melbourne on March 26, was always a notch above Boonsak who was also bidding for his maiden title in the championships. Boonsak threatened to create an upset when he led 9-4 in the second game but Chong Wei came back brilliantly to deny Thailands No 1 shuttler glory. Chong Wei took home US$10,000 while Boonsak received US$5,000.

In the womens singles, Wang Chen of Hong Kong clinched her third Asian title
after a hardfought 21-14, 9-21, 21-16 win over Kaori Mori of Japan in a repeat of last years final. Up and coming pair Yu Yang-Du Jing saved the blushes for power house China when they defeated Chien Yu Chin-Cheng Wen Hsing of Chinese Taipei 21-11, 21-16 in the womens doubles final.

The mixed doubles title went to Indonesian world champions Nova Widianto-Lilyana Natsir who defeated second seeds Sudket Prapakamol-Saralee
Thungthongkam of Thailand 21-16, 21-23, 21-15 in the final.
