14/05/15 - Lights switched on - Project complete

The lights on Field 7 and 8 have now been switched and everything has gone to plan.  These fields are now available for our own hockey teams and other sporting clubs to use.  A big thank you to all who helped make this happen.

17/01/15 - Work has again started

Work is continuing with electrical and excavation work needed in preparation for another stage of this project

Rained again....Sat 13 December

Despite the pouring rain our band of volunteers continued to work to get most of the wiring completed.  Peter Rook and his team will finish off ready for the poles to be placed.

Thank you to all the volunteers who turned up to assist the MDHA in another stage of our Lighting Project.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED........Rained out on Sat 6th December so we will try again Sat 13 December

Do you have a desire to belong? Here is a great oportunity to  expand your soclal contacts whilst lending a hand in a community project.

Work will continue  on their lighting towers.
Peter Rook would appreciate as many hands as can de rounded up.
You dont need to be an electrician as much of the work will be about pulling wires and bolting the 40 lamp fittings to head frames.

Morning tea, refreshment and lunch will be provided during the day to all our "Valued Volunteers".

Wide Bay Crane Hire team have done the heavy lifting and pulled the massive towers together for us. Now the boys are keen to lift the six of them into position, but they are waiting for MDHA to complete our works.

Looking forward to seeing a good team on the ground next Saturday.

David Moore,
Build Team Co ordinator.

11/10/14 - UPDATE FROM PRESIDENT (please note date change for working bee)

It is expected that on Wednesday 15th or Thursday 16th, the first delivery of componentry for the lighting towers arrives. This will be the massive reinforcing cages and hold down bolts that will be inserted into the concrete footings required to keep the light towers standing upright. It is hoped Persals will be able to begin work on footings soon.

Also next week the 400 plus meters of trenching for electrical will be dug ready for the installation of conduits and cables.

Trenching has been organised for 24/10/2014 and install conduit and pits 25/10/2014. A large chain type trencher will be used and this should break up the spoil smaller.

First call out for Volunteers:

  • Come on Saturday 25th October to help Peter Rook and others layout conduits and pull in cables would be much appreciated.
  • It is expected to start work from about 7.00am and we will stay until completed, around mid-afternoon. MDHA will provide lunch and refreshment to all our volunteers.
  • Need at least 12 helpers but more the merrier. If you have an hour or more free and would like to help please come on out.
  • Report to David (President) on arrival for sign in and induction.

Remember to wear closed footwear (shoes, no flip flops etc.) and Sun protection, hat, shirt and sun screen.

03/10/14 - PRESIDENTS REPORT

These fields will be there for all community groups and the MDHA clubs and players to use for training when in mid-winter the sun goes down before 6.00pm. Teams that do not have a Turf field time slot will now have options for training times, whilst those teams that do a second night of fitness training will not have to work in semi darkness as they have been doing.

Design and Building Approvals have been completed and we begin now to do the startup processes........

Our construction team is: Neil Weller as Project Manager, Peter Rook from Gillespie Electrical (our electrical works supervisor), Kel Savage representing MDHA, Grounds Committee and myself, David Moore in two roles, one as the Principal/Client and the other as Construction Supervisor for all works not electrical. This group has been meeting and drafted up the construction program and are now making progress on the placing of orders for equipment and services for project start.

The towers will take some 6 weeks to arrive, however there is much work to be done beforehand.

  • Hundreds of metres of trench need to be dug (by machine) for underground power system. However we first need to lift the turf sods and store them so as to be placed back over the trench line after conduits are laid and the backfill is completed.  This work starts in a week or two, and we are seeking Volunteers to help with parts like, moving turf (bring a wheelbarrow or trolley if you can).
  • After trenches are dug, more Volunteer labour to help lay the conduits and pull wiring through them.
  • The machine will backfill trenches upon completion of conduits, so the great group of MDHA Volunteers would then be ready to relay the turf sods.
  • Approved contractors will bore footing holes for the light towers and cast the concrete and steel foundations.
  • The towers should be arriving about this time, so once more we have opportunity for Volunteers to assist in the works. Activities would include, bolting parts together, attaching light fittings to cross arms and drawing electric cables through the columns helping making them ready to be erected.
  • When the towers have all components attached, the approved contractors will once again take control of works and with the aid of large cranes, the 25 metre tall towers will be raised onto their foundations and bolted into position.
  • After this time, any electricians within the Association thinking they might be able to help can Volunteer building control systems, your time and skills would be greatly appreciated.

MDHA will post Web and Facebook updates keeping you informed of what is going to happen and when our Volunteers are required. I see it as being over a number of weekends for us.  The machines and contractors will do their part between Monday and Friday, which will allow MDHA Saturday and Sunday to carry out work with our fabulous Volunteers.

Just as with the Turf replacement we shaved $25,000 of cost of project, all our volunteer work will make a significant reduction of cost on this project.

I hope to see many of our Hockey Family and Friends come out and share in the excitement and fun that comes from being involved within a great community group project. (BBQ and refreshments will be provided on these working days)

Cheers to all

David Moore, President MDHA
