Granville Tigers and Uniteds.....Grand Final Winners for 2013

 

Div 1 Men Granville defeated  Wallaroos 7 – 6 (After extra time)

With only one minute into the game Roos were on the attack and a corner was awarded.  The drag out was stick trapped perfectly for Cody Goldenstein to have a straight shot and slot the ball into the net. Granville forced a counter attack to get the ball into the circle and force a corner. The corner broke down however Aaron Grevell was able to capitalise on the opportunity with a great tomahawk to level the score 1 all with only 5 mins into the game.  Granville had another chance when Aaron passed to Nathan Bristow who had a shot however resulted in a corner.  Cameron Bakers drag flick went high over the net. Soon after another corner was awarded to Granville. A perfectly executed drag out from Nathan Bristow for Aaron Grevell to stick trap and Cameron Baker to drag flick putting the ball in the box for the score 2 – 1 to Granville.  Play continued up and down the field fast and furious. Jack Wareing received a green card. With only 14mins into the game a great ball found Nathan Bristow who ran the ball into the circle to earn a penalty corner.  Another perfectly executed corner resulted in a drag flick high in the box from Cameron Baker to increase the score to 3 – 1.  With 17 mins into the first half great work by Roos forwards to pressure the Granville defence for a corner.  The straight shot at goal by Tony Dakin deflected off the goalie into the net to bring the score back to 3 – 2 in Granvilles favour.  Great ball found Roos forwards allowing the run to the backline however a great tackle by Granville spoilt any further chance for Roos to get closer to the goal box.  Great ball from Tim Lynch to Aaron Grevell to Dillon Hyland however shot went wide. Mitchell Kersnovske continued to build up play however Granvilles strong defence of Travis Sutton and Michael McKenna shut them down.  With only 5 mins left before half time a quick self play allowed Aaron Grevell to penetrate the circle to earn a corner.  A drag flick towards the box was saved by Martin Harveys quick reaction to deny Granville a goal however another corner was awarded. The straight shot at goal was again saved by Roos goalie Martin Harvey. Half time score 3 – 2 to Granville.

Second half – Roos again pounced early in attack with a free hit penetrating the circle to be awarded a corner. The drag flick was saved by Granvilles goalie Tom Revill however another corner was awarded. Green card to Travis. The straight shot at goal was saved by the goalie. With only 5 mins in Roos put the ball towards the circle for Joel Williams to make the most of the opportunity and put the ball in the box to level the score 3 – 3.  Levelling the score fired up Roos with Cody Goldenstein making a great run into the circle for a shot however Tom Revill made a great save. Roos continued to attack with a corner being awarded however a lay off from the drag out resulted in a long corner. Roos continued to pressure with another hit from outside to drive the ball into the circle however it was cleared by Granville. A perfectly placed hard flat ball by Alex Waring outside the circle deflected off a Granville stick into the box for an own goal to allow Roos to be in front 4 - 3.  12 mins into the second half a spectacular tomahawk by Cody Goldenstein hit the top crossbar then into the net allowing Roos to get further in front 5 – 3.  Green to Joel Williams.  Granville were provided another opportunity when a corner was awarded for a deliberate ball over the backline. The drag flick deflected off Roos defence for another corner to Granville.  From the corner another corner was awarded. Another perfectly executed corner set up allowed Cameron Baker to drag flick into the net to reduce the margin to 5 – 4 with Roos still in the lead. Half way through the second half Aaron Grevell forced a corner but the drag flick was saved by Roos goalie resulting in another corner. Again another perfectly executed corner with the drag flick by Cameron Baker high into net for another goal to level the score 5 all.  With Roos desperate to stay in the lead great ball distribution by Mitchell Kersnovske and great teamwork enabled them to build up play into their circle for a corner.  Roos then perfectly executed their corner set up with a great drag flick by Shaun Goldenstein to take them back in the lead 6 – 5.  Joel Williams speed and skill allowed him to carry the ball into circle forcing an infringement for a corner.  The drag flick was saved by Tom Revill. A quick sixteen free hit was taken by Granville enabling them to make ground and enter the circle and earning a corner.  Yellow card to Tim Grevell.  A drag flick was taken resulting in another corner.  From the corner it was a lay off however Roos were quick to pounce and cleared the ball out of the circle. Granville continued to attack with a great save by Martin Harvey however lots of scrambling by Roos resulted in another corner. Again a perfect corner set up for the drag flick by Cameron Baker into the net to level the score 6 – 6. With 8 mins to go Joel Williams made a great run and was heading towards the box however Granville made the perfect tackle to gain possession.  With little time left the intensity was unbelievable with both teams desperate to score and the ball going from end to end. Tim Lynch was able to get in the circle for a great high shot however Martin Harveys quick reflexes saved a sure goal.  With only 3 mins left until the final whistle Cameron Baker made a great run to pass into the circle for a corner. Drag flick saved by Roos defence for a long corner. With 50 secs on the clock Cody Goldenstein had a great run and made good ground.  Yellow card to Travis Sutton resulted in a corner to Roos. A straight shot at goal was saved by Granvilles goalie. The full time whistle went with a score of 6 – 6.

Extra time  (7 and half minutes each way golden goal)

Roos started with ball however possession was lost.  A hit from Joel Helmstedt penetrated the circle for a corner to be awarded the shot at goal deflected off Roos defence. With 4 mins left Roos got a breakaway to penetrate the circle and force the ball onto a Granville foot for a corner. Yellow to Michael McKenna. With Roos desperate to convert the corner the pressure was on.  The drag flick was saved by Granville however another corner was awarded. Another drag flick was taken for another corner to be awarded. This time the drag flick went wide.  Only 1 min left Travis Sutton hit the ball perfectly into the circle resulting in a corner. This perfect corner set up with Cameron Baker drag flicking the ball high just inside the upright for the winning goal. End result 7 – 6 to Granville.

Everyone would have to agree that this game was the most intense and spectacular game that has been seen for a long time and both teams should be congratulated for this great display of skills, ability and effort.  Well done boys!

Div 1 Women Uniteds defeated Granville 1 - 0

Nice work by Rebecca Greiner early in the game to work the ball into the circle for Uniteds to hold possession however Granvilles defence cleared the ball out of the circle.  Uniteds continued their strong attack for the first 8 mins with the ball mainly being in their attacking half.  Granville then started to attack with a nice ball from Kiah Hawker into the circle however Uniteds defence earned a free hit to take the pressure of them.  10 mins into the game Granville were awarded a corner. Drag out by Erin McKenna for Kim Bristow to take the shot however the runner caused a deflection denying Granville a chance to score. Granville continued to attack and pressure the Uniteds defence.  Uniteds earned a corner after an infringement in the circle by Granville.  A lay off then another pass in the circle resulted in another corner. Drag out to top of circle back to the dragger however ball went over the backline for a sixteen to give Granville a bit of relief.  An infridgement outside the circle by Uniteds resulted in a corner to Granville. Drag by Kiah Hawker stick trap by Sarah Hawker and a drag flick by Brooke Savage however could not convert. With 8 mins to go in the first half Granville started to attack more and continuing to pressure Uniteds and penetrating the circle many times.  With 3 mins to go great skills by Sandra Moores forced a corner. The drag from Kiah went to Kim for a straight shot but saved by Uniteds goalie Jessica Switzer.  Another corner was awarded. Drag by Kiah stick stop by Sarah lay off to right but spoilt by Uniteds .  Nil all at half time.

Second half - Uniteds gained possession early however a great tackle by Sarah Hawker stopped the attack going into the circle. 3 minutes into the game Uniteds great pass into the circle to find Naomi Lynch whose quick reaction time was able to flick the ball into the top of the net for the first goal of the match. Nice hit by Uniteds found Lauren Scholl who covered good ground running the ball up the field close to the circle to allow Uniteds to attack. 10 mins in good ball movement from Uniteds to get the ball in the circle however cleared by Chris Rosin to Erin Crick who was able to run to run the ball to the backline to cross the ball however deflected off Uniteds to spoil Granvilles opportunity.  Kiah Hawker made a strong pass across the circle for Chris Rosin to dive to just miss the ball.  With 20 mins to go Granville were pressured with a great ball from Rebecca Greiner to Morgan Stephenson who ran the ball into the circle for a shot however saved by Tayla Miller Granvilles goalie. Uniteds continued to pressure with the ball drilled into the circle for a corner to be awarded. Drag from Naomi to Shannon Brown and an infringement from Granville resulted in another corner. Naomi drag to Shannon shot by Rebecca however again saved by Tayla but a long corner awarded. With 17 mins to go Uniteds pressed hard on a sixteen hit to retain possession and move in the circle for a corner to be awarded. Great drag out from Naomi to Lauren Scholl however deflected off the Granville defence.  Uniteds continued to pressure hard however an infringement by Sandra Moores of Granville resulted in a yellow card allowing Uniteds an opportunity to capitalise on one less player.  However Granvilles determination did not permit Uniteds to have any advantage. With 7 mins to go Granville were desperate to score getting the ball close to the circle many times however again Uniteds defence were too strong. With 5 mins left on the clock Uniteds were awarded a corner. A drag out from Gabbi Worner to Shannon Brown however shot at goal too high.  With only 1 min left Granville were desperate to score pressuring Uniteds in the 25 however a more determined Uniteds outfit with their close marking and strong and hard defending denied Granville of any further opportunities. The final whistle blew with a result of 1 nit to Uniteds.
