Relayathon - Saturday 25th Feb 2023

2022-23 Wrap Up

Congratulations to our U14-17's for once again running the most laps in their 20min session on the weekend, taking the baton around the track 18 times.  Our U11's and U12's came in equal 2nd with 17 laps, with the U13's running 16.  Overall we ran 136 laps, just topping last year's effort.

We raised $1,191 in cash and EFTPOS donations, meaning we will donate $2382 to the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal (we upped our cap to $1500) as well as $658 to the Monash Children's Hospital.

If you wish to donate, you can do so directly here - Mentone Little Athletics Centre (goodfridayappeal.com.au)

This means our overall donations this year will be $3,040, a really amazing effort!

Relayathon is a fundraising event for the Royal Children's Hospital, endorsed by LAVic. Season 2021-22 sees LAVic celebrate 50 years of Relayathon.  At Mentone we also donate funds to the Monash Children's Hospital.

Relayathon is a continuous relay using a single baton, where the overall aim is to work together to run as many laps as possible within a three hour period.  At Mentone we add an additional element where age-group teams compete to see who can run the most laps in a set period of time.

The basic rules are as follows:

  • Relayathon will start at 9am and finish at 12 noon.
  • Girls and boys from the same age group will run as an age-group team.
  • Age-group teams will have 20 minute time periods to run as many laps as possible.
  • Athletes must run relay legs of at least 100m.
  • Only completed laps are counted toward the age-group team tally.
  • Family and friends may also run in the gaps between age-group teams or help if their child's age-group team gets tired, although at least one Athlete from the age-group team must run a leg of each lap during their timeslot.
  • Change-over stations will be at the middle of each straight and the middle of each bend.
  • Additional Parent Helpers are needed to oversee the change-over stations.

Cash and EFT donations can be made on the day and will go to the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal.  The Centre will match these donations up to a limit of $1500.  If you make an online donation directly to the Good Friday Appeal, send your receipt to mentone@lavic.com.au before the 15th March and we will also match these donations up to our limit.

Athletes are also encouraged to generate sponsorship money - for example they could ask for sponsors for their age-group team on a per lap basis.  As a guide, teams do 10-15 laps.

Mentone LAC will also donate a base amount of $250 to the Monash Children's Hospital, AND an additional $3 per lap to Monash.  We feel this is important as our kids are more likely to go to Monash in an emergency.

2021-22 Wrap Up

Congratulations to our U14-15-16 Age Groups for taking the prize with 20 laps in our Relayathon this year.  Runners-up were the U11's with 17 laps.  Overall we ran 135 laps, slightly down on our 2019-20 result.

We collected $543.80 in cash and EFTPOS donations on the day, with a further $135.78 donated online, for a total of $679.58 raised by our members for the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal.  We have transferred the money we collected with an additional $500 from the Centre (we hit our $500 limit).

We have also donated $655 to the Monash Children's Hospital, made up of a base $250 plus $3 per lap.

Therefore this year's Relayathon has raised $1,834.58, not a bad effort indeed!

2020-21 Wrap Up

We ran a limited Relayathon this season to try to minimise the disruption to the program for our U9-16 Athletes, therefore it was only our U6, U7 and U8 age groups who ran.

Congratulations to our U8's who ran an impressive 14 laps, with U6 and U7 groups coming in equal second with 11 laps apiece.

We collected $143.60 in cash and eftpos donations on Saturday.  As promised, we will match this amount when we transfer our Centre's contribution to LAVic. In addition, if you make an online donation directly to the Good Friday Appeal, send your receipt to mentone@lavic.com.au before the 28th March and we will also match these donations (up to a total Centre donation of $500).

We will also donate a base amount of $250 to the Monash Children's Hospital, plus $3 per lap.  This year our kids ran 36 laps, so that's $358 to Monash.

2019-20 Wrap Up

Well done to our U13's for taking line honours in our 2019-20 Relayathon with a massive 19 laps. Overall we ran 141 laps, 10 more than last year.

We collected $122.15 on the day, which will will match and donate to The Royal Childrens' Hospital here.  In addition, we'll donate $723 to the Monash Childrens' Hospital, made up of a $250 base amount plus $3 per lap, PLUS $50 that Cheltenham Primary asked us to donate instead of giving to them as part of our school membership incentive program.

2018-19 Wrap Up

Congratulations to our U12 and U13 age-groups who achieved an equal-first performance of 18 laps at Relayathon for 2018-19.  It was actually 16, but as we ran in lane 8 we've adjusted the lap count to account for the longer lap distance.  This was 5 more laps than our winning group last year - well done!

Our overall tally was 131 laps, an improvement of 1 over last year.

Thanks to everyone who donated we raised $108.35 in cash on the day.  The Centre will match this donation, but we are still about $500 off our target so please go to everydayhero and give generously.  If every family gave $1 per lap their children's age-groups completed we'd hit the target easily.

We also pledged to donate $250 plus $3 per lap to the Monash Children's Hospital - therefore we've donated $643 via the Monash everydayhero page.

The age-group lap breakdown was:

U6 = 11

U7 = 12

U8 = 12

U9 = 16

U10 = 12

U11 = 12

U12 = 18

U13 = 18

U14-16 = 16

Plus 4 laps in between the age-group timeslots.

Go Mentone!

2017-18 Wrap Up

A big thank you to everyone who donated to our Relayathon appeal, and of course to all of the kids (and parents) who kept the baton moving all morning.

We ran a total of 130 laps, with our U13's taking out the Age Group Challenge 13 laps.  The Age-Group lap breakdown was as follows:

U6 = 10

U7 = 12

U8 = 11

U9 = 12

U10 = 11

U11 = 12

U12 = 12

U13 = 13

U14/15/16 = 12

We raised $294 in cash donations on the day.  We promised to match this and therefore we have donated a total of $588 to the Royal Children's Hospital via our everydayhero page.  Donations can still be made here.

In addition, we pledged to donate a base amount of $250 to the Monash Children's Hospital, with an additional $3 per lap, so we have donated a total of $640 to the Monash Children's Hospital.

Go Mentone!
