Pull Up Your Socks and Friday night games for round 12
Wimmera Hockey Association round 12 was full of activity with Friday night games, fast matches, rules sessions and a McGrath Foundation Pull Up Your Socks campaign.
Horsham Hockey Club hosted the round at the Dimboola Health and Fitness Centre, with all three Horsham teams wearing the McGrath Foundation official pink and black striped socks in support of the Pull Up Your Socks campaign.
Hockey Victoria umpires coaches Charlie Martin and Mark Frost ran two rules sessions in the Dimboola clubrooms with good attendance on Saturday afternoon while ‘Frosty’ also umpired a couple of matches during the day.
Juniors
Dimboola Kookaburras put up a good fight against Warrack Revengers although Revengers managed several scores to win 5-0. Four goals and a strong performance at centre half back earned Jack Dean top honours for Revengers. Kookaburras Daniel Danisch was named best for a good performance as goalie.
Fourth placed Nhill Leopards also put a good fight and also lost 5-0 to a stronger side in top side Yanac Warriors. Half back Lachie Wilde was named best for Leopards, while centre half back Todd Alexander played best for Warriors, also with three goals.
Horsham Bombers in the McGrath Foundation fundraiser socks played a strong team game against Dimboola Kangaroos. Half time score was 3-1 but Bombers ran away in the second half converting another five. Kangaroos benefitted from a few borrowed players, including Alex Magrath who scored twice. William Gulline was a great strength for the Bombers putting in a top performance to be named best, also scoring four goals in the 8-2 win. Rebekah Albrecht at centre half back for Kangaroos directed play well to help them achieve several attacks.
Kaniva Raiders had the bye, and with the top two junior teams now with two byes each, Warriors are just in front by a two-goal difference.
Women
Dimboola Women were on fire under lights on Friday night against the home side Horsham Highlanders. Still missing three key players the Highlanders struggled to combat the flow, directed by Dimboola’s centre half back Elizabeth Klinge who was named best, also with a goal. Dimboola spread the scoring across seven players. Highlanders weren’t without their attack with a few quick runs but couldn’t convert. Full back Claire Barnett was named best for Highlanders. Dimboola won 10-0.
Yanac Women found some tough opposition in the lower placed Warrack Women winning a very close 1-0 . The top women Yanac scored late into the first half through inner Louise Bone but Warrack’s strong half back line kept them from scoring further. Half back Alana Argent was again named best for Warrack, while Caitlyn Smith stepped up this week playing a strong right half back to take top honours for Yanac.
Kaniva Women put in a strong performance mixing up their lineup a bit which strengthened their attack and helped keep Nhill Thunderbirds to no score at half time while Kaniva just missed a few opportunities. Thunderbirds got stronger in the second half and scored to win 3-0. Inners were the top named players with Leah Hawker for the victors, with one goal, while Lisa Stimson was a driving force for Kaniva.
Open
In the Friday night open match Dimboola Men and Horsham Hurricanes played an even first half before Dimboola ran away with in the second half to win 7-1. A Jorgensen father and son combination accounted for six out of the seven goals with two to father Basil, one to son his Tim and three to his other son Nathan, while Trevor Krelle scored the other. James Keating at half back was named best for Dimboola while half back Barry Clark was best for Hurricanes. Borrowed player Marcus Williamson scored the lone goal for Hurricanes.
In the match of the round Yanac Tigers held on to win a close 4-3 against Warrack Hoops on Saturday afternoon. The top two sides were level 2-all at half time. Yanac were calm and collected scoring twice in the second half to be two in front. Hoops were still firing and scored one back in the final two minutes. Hoops’ three goals this game more than doubles the number of goals scored against Tigers this season, now still a low 5 which, incidentally, is the low number each of the three Yanac teams have had scored against them so far. Hoops have accounted for four of those five. Consistent centre half back Nathan Alexander was best for Tigers, while inner Paul Slater was a stand out for Hoops. Both teams have vast scoring abilities with seven individual scorers across the sides for the game.
Kaniva Cobras put on a great display of hockey winning a strong 7-0 against Nhill Rangers. Rangers full backs Mont Miller and David Reichelt were named best, defending well and blocking many advances. Cobras scored through five scorers proving strength in attack. Inner Jordan Clark, with a goal, was named best in the attack for Cobras.
