Big Canberra Bike Ride incorporating Amy's Ride 2012

1300 Canberrans set the wheels in motion

Around 1300 riders took to the streets on Sunday 18 March in Canberra’s biggest mass participation cycling event, the Big Canberra Bike Ride incorporating Amy’s Ride.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher and Deputy Chief Minister Andrew Barr finished the 28km ride while cycling enthusiast Andy Friend tackled the 105km route.

“The Big Canberra Bike Ride incorporating Amy’s Ride was a fantastic way to share the road with Canberra’s novice riders, experienced cyclists and everyone in between,” Former Brumbies Coach Andy Friend said. “It is great to see so many people out here today enjoying the great cycling networks Canberra has to offer,” he added.

“This has always been one of the highlights of the year for Pedal Power and Canberra’s cycling community and it is great to have the Amy Gillett Foundation and Heart Foundation involved to promote Canberra as Australia’s cycling capital,” Pedal Power Executive Officer John Armstrong said.

“I am passionate about seeing more people riding, more safely and it is great to see so many people in the community challenging themselves and enjoying the thrill, freedom and health benefits that riding a bike provides,” Amy Gillett Foundation CEO, Tracey Gaudry said.

“With more than one in two adults overweight or obese in the ACT, as well as one in four children, bicycling is great way for the whole family to be physically active to maintain a healthy weight,” Heart Foundation CEO Tony Stubbs said. “Just 30 minutes of physical activity a day can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease by as much as half,” Mr Stubbs added.
