Three ladies from the Hills WBC entered the recent District Rookies Competition - Elizabeth Varecka, Wendy Feeney and Karen McCann - and they played at Northmead BC on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 July.

Both Elizabeth and Wendy were successful in making it through to the final on Wednesday and it's always hard to play a final against an opponent from your own club - there can only be one winner.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Varecka on winning the match 25-19 against a very worthy opposition.  Well done to both Elizabeth and Wendy.

Runner-up Wendy Feeney with the winner Elizabeth Varecka.

In the recent District playoffs teams from the Hills WBC were successful in winning the Fours, Triples, Pairs and Singles competitions.

The Region 16 playoffs were held from Mon 9 to Thurs 12 July where the teams from the Hills represented Mitchell District.

Monday 9 July – Fours playoffs: On a cold, windy but sunny day the Hills Fours played Carlingford WBC.  Down 3-11 on the 11th end, it was 12 all on the 17th and the Hills went on to win 17-14.

Shirley de la Harpe (SKip), Debbie Howard, Jo McKennell and Chris Cadman

Tuesday 10 July – Pairs playoffs: Again a lovely sunny day, perfect for bowls, and the Hills Pairs played North Ryde WBC.  The Hills came from 8 down to the final score of 19-16 to North Ryde, however the Hills team were lucky to pick up an 8 on end 4 thanks to a wayward bowl from the opposition skip.

Karen McCann and Chris Cadman (Skip)

Wednesday 11 July - Triples playoffs: Nice warm day, once again perfect for bowls when the Hills Triples played Brush Park WBC.  On the 17th end the score was 18-18 with the Hills winning the game 20-18.

Debbie Howard, Chris Cadman and Shirley de la Harpe (Skip)

Thursday 12 July – Singles playoff: The weather continued to be perfect for bowls.  The Hills played North Ryde WBC (Ivy Hitchins, a very experienced bowler).  North Ryde lead by 6 during the game and the Hills caught up to be 20-23.  However, experience won the day with North Ryde taking out the game 25-21.

Congratulations to all the Hills players who made it to the playoffs and best of luck to the Fours and Triples for the State playoffs at Taren Point in September.

Congratulations to Chris Cadman, Debbie Howard and Shirley de la Harpe on their win in the District Triples.  They played Blacktown WBC in the final and won the match 20-12.  Well done ladies and good luck in the Regional playoffs.

ANNUAL OPEN CARNIVAL - Hosted by Allan Drew Funerals

Monday 25 July was the perfect Winters Day for our annual Open Carnival, hosted once again by Allan Drew Funerals.

22 teams competed in a Turn Around Triples game with lots of laughter from ladies who were not used to playing in different positions.  Some JACK throwing was way off centre from Skips not used to playing Lead, and some calls from Leads playing Skips were very interesting.

Teams from around Sydney attended and the winners photos are below, with the day being taken out by a team from Blacktown Workers WBC.

Once again our Social Committee excelled with the room looking particularly festive for the occasion.

Our wonderful sponsors - Allan Drew and Kirsten Power

Winners - Blacktown WBC

Second place - Pennant Hills WBC

Third Place - The Hills WBC

It was a proud day for The Hills WBC on Tuesday 12 June when our Grade 4/1s were awarded their Mitchell District medals for winning the Grade 4 Pennant season.  District president Toni Pollock, along with Grade 4 District manager Faye Davidson (a former Hills player) were on hand for the medal presentation, followed by the presentation of the District Flag by president Toni.

The team also won the Regional play-offs and will be competing in the State play-offs at Terrigal in August.  A great achievement ladies and best of luck in August.  Doubtless there will be a huge number of  supporters on the sideline for the State games.

The Club's 4/2s were runners up in the District pennants and it was great to have both teams together for the presentation.

Unfortunately the weather was not too kind earlier in the morning, which meant the presentation had to be done inside the Club and bowls was delayed until about 10.30.  But once the rain stopped, it was onto the bowling green, followed by the flag raising in the garden of the Club.

Thank you President Toni and Grade 4 Manager Faye for attending our "special day".

Proudly holding their District Flag - Gail Hatty, Keren Moffitt, Pat Robinson and Sheryn Batcheldor (Skip) and Dianne Stewart, Diane Atkins, Diane Castles and Penny Lovejoy (Skip)

This year WBNSW have decided to introduce a Membership Badge, awarded for the number of years continuous membership  with WBNSW.  These badges will only be awarded in increments of 10 years.  Previously badges were awarded at Veterans Day to members who attained a significant birthday, with no reference to their NSW membership.  This has been discontinued in favour of this new recognition.

Our Club was fortunate to have four ladies receive membership badges in this inaugural year and they were Elizabeth Leahy, Pat Greene and Norma Bratz (for 20 years) and Judy Barbaro (for 10 years).

A special morning tea was held on Tuesday 29 May when president Barbara Burdack presented the ladies with their badges.  Congratulations ladies!!

The final of the Hills Club Major Singles was played on Tuesday 22 May on what turned out  to be a beautiful Autumn day.  Chris Cadman led early in the game before Shirley de la Harpe made a come back to take the game 25 to 18.  It was a good game right until the last bowl was played.  Congratulations to both Shirley and Chris for making the final.

Congratulations to our winning Grade 4/1s Pennant Team who, after taking out the Mitchell District competition, have gone on to beat Brush Park in the Regional playoffs 46-28.  Great effort ladies - Penny Lovejoy (Skip), Pat Robinson, Sheryn Batcheldor (Skip), Dianne Stewart, Keren Moffitt, Gail Hatty, Diane Castles and Diane Atkins.

Fantastic achievement and good luck in the State playoffs in August.

Three District titles for Chris Cadman - Congratulations!!!

Earlier this year, Chris Cadman, Club Coach, was part of the winning Fours team which took out the Mitchell District Open Fours competition.

Chris recently won the Mitchell District Singles title and, partnered by Karen McCann, also took out the Mitchell District Open Pairs title.

Well done and best of luck in the Regional playoffs in July.

Wishing our fantastic 4/1s Pennant Team good luck for the Regional play-offs to be held on Tuesday 8 May at Castle Hill.  Hopefully they will be heading to the State play-offs later in the year.   Go girls!!

IN-HOUSE CARNIVAL - Sponsored by Ian and Scott Haggarty

The balmy Autumn weather continued on Tuesday 10 April and the members had put their names down to play in the single name entry In-House Carnival.  It was great to see the mix of the teams with experienced players playing alongside those who just come for the social side of bowls.

The Carnival was sponsored by our wonderful  supporters, Ian and Scott Haggarty, although neither of these gentlemen were available to attend lunch on the day.

Thank you both for your continued support of our Club.  The ladies had a great day and once again the Social Committee outdid themselves.

Winners - Marjorie Brown, Shirley de la Harpe (Skip) and Giovanna Cipriano

Second Place - June Evans, Pat Greene and Jan Hawthorne (Skip)

Third Place - Liz Leahy (Skip), Diane Castles and Karen McCann

Congratulations to the Australian Women's Fours and Triples Bowling Teams, taking out the GOLD medal in the Commonwealth Games.  Amazing result girls.

And what a result for the men's B6/B7/B8 triples led by Australia’s oldest Commonwealth Games athlete, Ken Hanson.  Great win over New Zealand to take the GOLD medal

We are all very proud of our Aussie athletes over the past two weeks.  Great Games!!!!

The Hills WBC Grade 4/1s were winners in the recent pennant season held by Mitchell District, with our 4/2s coming in runners-up.  Congratulations to both teams for putting in such a massive performance and making the Club very proud.  Well done to all of you!!!

On Sunday 18th February, Ian and Scott Haggarty (First National Real Estate) sponsored our Turn-Around Triples Carnival.  The numbers entered were a little disappointing, but all who competed had a great morning of bowls and a very delicious lunch.

Thanks to Ian and Scott for their continued support of both the Women's and Men's bowling clubs at The Hills - your continued patronage is much appreciated.

The week of 15th January saw The Hills Club host the Mitchell District Open and Senior Fours and the Hills had a number of teams competing in the Senior section and 1 team in the Open.

Fortunately the games were played at twilight which kept the temperature down a bit.

The semi of the Senior Fours was played on Thursday 18th:  Dural vs The Hills;  Castle Hill vs Castle Hill.  Dural and Castle Hill played the final the following night with Dural winning the game 21-6. Congratulations to the Dural ladies (pictured below).

The Open final was held at the same time with The Hills playing Pennant Hills.  Although the Hills lead from the start, Pennant Hills won the last few ends, but The Hills held on to take the title with the final score 16-14.  Well done The Hills!!

The final of the Club Major/Minor was held over from December and played on Tuesday 16 January.  In hot conditions the game was closely contested, however there can only be one  winner.  Congratulations to winners Sue Lemon and Shirley de la Harpe and runners-up Karen McCann and Debbie Howard for making the finals.

Tuesday 12 December was our last bowling day for 2017 and also our Christmas Party.  We were fortunate to have some of our sponsors join us for lunch and some (Neil and Daniel from SCU) join us for a game of bowls.

Our Christmas Party was the perfect day to have Hazel Brain and Elaine Smith join us for lunch, after illness has kept them from the Club lately.

It was a fun day both on and off the green and we even had a visit from Santa.

Thanks to our amazing Social Committee for the festive decorations and wonderful lunch - you excelled yourselves ladies!!

Merry Christmas to all our members and happy bowling in 2018.

The Hills Club entered a “Mixed Gold” team in the 2017 NSW Club Challenge with the final played at Warilla on Sunday 3 December.  The format consisted of 6 players, playing singles, pairs or triples. The team played some strong opposition to make it to the final, played against Woonona BC with The Hills being the winner.

CONGRATULATIONS to Bill Farrell, Danny Phillips, Kevin Furniss, Shirley de la Harpe, Chris Cadman and Karen McCann. Debbie Howard and Wendy Bell were part of the team during the sectional rounds and Peter Eagle supported the team throughout the competition.  Well done to all members of the team!

On Monday 27 November, 35 of our members met for lunch to celebrate Cecily Norris' 80th birthday.  Cecily has been bowling since 1983 and a member of The Hills WBC since 1991.

Once again the social ladies excelled with decorating the tables in Cecily's favourite colour - pastel pink.  After Cecily cut her cake, her close friend Norma Freeman gave a touching speech in Cecily's honour.

48 of our members travelled to Ettalong on Tuesday 21 November for the annual Challenge Day, which has been contested between the 2 Clubs for the past 10 years.

After 3 straight years retaining the trophy, The Hills WBC was beaten by Ettalong WBC with a score of 229-175.

The greens were lightning fast, and posed a challenge for The Hills ladies, with only 3 rink wins and 1 rink draw.

But, as they say, it's not about the winning.  It's about the good company and friendship shared between the 2 clubs that continues to make this day a well supported event each year.

In the absence of our President, our 2 vice-presidents took the reins for the presentation with Norma Bratz handing over the trophy to Ettalong President Elaine Melross and Pat Robinson thanking Ettalong Club for their hospitality and friendship and setting down the challenge for 2018.

The combined presentation night for ladies and men bowlers was held on Saturday 11 November at The Hills Club.  There was approx. 70-80 bowlers and partners in attendance.

MC Terry Barnett (ex-vice president) welcomed members and guests and introduced President Ken Carroll and Madam President Barbara Burdack to the podium to read the list of 2017 Special Recognitions.  Congratulations to all men bowlers listed in the program and a special mention to the following lady bowlers who played in district and regional matches:  Shirley de la Harpe, Debbie Howard, Margaret Wild, Carole Martin, Chris Cadman, Benita Woods, Wendy Bell, Kerry Wallace and Lyn Skeers.

Further presentations were made throughout the night for winners and runners-up of Club Championship events and these were presented by Pat Robinson (vice president), Elizabeth Leahy (Director) and Barbara Burdack (President) along with Erik Hobson (Director), Uwe Bendt (Treasurer) and Ken Carroll (President).

The Club lost three members during 2017 - Ros Tribolet, Joan Clarke and Joan Miller - who were recognised during the evening.

Instead of our usual Pre-Melbourne Cup Carnival Day, the committee decided to dedicate the day to our lovely patron Meg Biscoe.

So, on Monday 6 November we held our inaugural Meg Biscoe Spring Carnival Day.

Unfortunately the weather was not kind and, instead of bowls, a fun game of trivia was played to keep us busy until lunch.  There were quite a few questionable questions and likewise answers, accompanied by lots of laughter.

Meg and her son Paul joined us for lunch, and in keeping with the Spring Carnival theme, Meg looked wonderful as she usually does.

Following lunch, there was a parade of ladies who "dolled up" for the day with their hats and fascinators.  The winner, chosen by Damian, Mel and Frances, was Giovanna Cipriano who looked resplendent in her maroon outfit and hat (which she had actually worn to the Melbourne Cup a few years ago).

Meg was given a beautiful arrangement of flowers for her continued patronage of the Club and Paul made a speech on behalf of his mother thanking the ladies for organising the day on behalf of Meg.

Congratulations to Shirley de la Harpe and Danny Phillips on being Runners-Up in the State Mixed Pairs.  Great effort!!!

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER - so  they say!!!!!

Traditionally, the BIGGEST MORNING TEA to  raise money for the Cancer Council, is held in March each year.  Unfortunately The Hills Club had so much going on at that time of the year we had to delay our fundraising effort until Tuesday 10 October.

The greens were awash with PINK and our Secretary, Keren Moffitt, very cleverly made the shape of the PINK RIBBON on the green for the ladies to pose for this lovely photo below.

The morning tea was amazing as usual and a HUGE thanks to all who cooked  for the event.

The Ladies raised $655 which has been sent to the Cancer Council and an appreciation certificate is below.

On Tuesday 3 October, the final of the Club Fours was contested in cloudy but fine conditions - a good day for bowls.  The competing teams were:  Chris Cadman, Barbara Burdack, Debbie Howard, Shirley de la Harpe (Skip) and Karen McCann, Wendy Bell, Sheryn Batcheldor, Lyn Skeers (Skip).

Shirley's team were winners of the Final with a score of 28-10, which did not reflect the calibre of the game - a hard fought contest with all bowlers giving 100%.

It was a family affair for Shirley's team with Mother and Daughter,Chris Cadman and Barbara Burdack, playing together for the second year in a row in the final (last year they were runners-up).

Congratulations to the 8 ladies who competed in the game.

Winners (with their trophy) - Chris, Debbie, Barbara and Shirley

Runners-Up - Lyn, Sheryn, Wendy and Karen

The weekend of 16/17 September was the annual Narrabri Spring Carnival so 12 ladies (3 teams) set off for the long drive/train ride for a fun weekend of bowls and good company.  While 9 of the ladies decided to drive the distance this year, 3 of our members decided to catch the train, although they may not be allowed on the train again as 1 of the group was "caught" passing a $10 counterfeit note to buy a cup of tea.

Two of the teams had ladies from other clubs make up their numbers and everyone agreed that they had a great weekend.

From the moment we arrived we were part of the Narrabri country hospitality and can't wait for the info to arrive for the 2018 carnival - we'll all be going back I'm sure.
