WE'RE LIVE! Results from Focus CXtwiLITE R2 Bonython Park

In a first for a South Australian cycling club, Port Adelaide CC published live chip-timed results on the web as the Focus CXtwiLITE races unfolded in Bonython Park last night.  This is a significant acheivement for a volunteer-run club as a comparable system retails at many 10's of thousands of dollars and uses proprietary chips - whereas we can manage the programming of our own.

PACC started using the Crossmgr software a few years ago, but it was not until mid 2016 that chip timing was introduced, and only yesterday when we tried live timing over WiFi, and today we went live!

Thanks to the #PACCnerdcommittee who have worked so hard to get this to happen, especially Peter Davis who has constructed the system using bits off ebay with some web shopping and who has managed the database that allows rich analytics.  Paula Hollamby (Commissairre) has fully embraced the system as an officiating tool (not just as a separate 'results timing system'), using the software to manage events effectively, handling everything from lap scoring and event duration through to rider welfare "where has that rider gone?".

And thanks to Ed and his team over in Canada who created the software specifically for cyclocross, although it has track, road and TT variants now too!  He takes suggestions on board and helps when we mess things up.

The weather was in the extreme category at 5pm (nudging 37C) so the decision was made to curtail the Little Xers event from on-course activities to a smaller course on the lawn - although Super Soakers and spray bottles were the order of the day.  The welcome cooler change rolled in just as the first Junior event was starting, dropping the temperature to a more pleasant 29C and we went LIVE.

The remainder of the races were races of attrition.  People with tubes and no sealant suffered punctures from 3-corner jacks, people with tubes with stans suffered pinchflats on the treeroots in the fast back straight, and people running tubeless burped tyres on the ballast and the fast off-camber left hand corner! Who would have throught that tyre selection and pressure whould be even more important in summer CX?

Next on the #nerdcommittee to-do list is to permanantly allocate CX race numbers to riders and build a self-service sign-on station.  So all you have to do is remember your chip and race numbers and sign youself in at the race - and only come to the rego desk if you need help or have forgotten something. And that way you can wash your own race numbers ;-)

Remember #pacccx to share your pics and vids!

That was our very last race of the 2016, have a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year if we don't see you at one of the PACC club rides (yes, there's a Xmas Day club ride)! Next Focus CXtwiLITE is 30 Jan, but stay tuned for some special CX action during the TDU...
