Thanks to a joint venture between the Adelaide Mountain Bike Club and Port Adelaide Cycling Club, led by the ideas mastermind and PACC Club Prez Kain Gardner, the Junior Dirt Skills development program was born in 2016!
The inaugural program which commenced in May 2016 saw 37 young kids aged 4-13 signed up to have fun, learn skills & develop as riders, ably assisted by PACC and AMBC club volunteers. PACC's Kain, SueAnn Woodwiss, Lee-Anne Fleming and Gemma Kernich became qualified MTBA Skills Coaches over this time.
With a growing number of volunteers and coaches willing and able to assist with the second 'summer' program, 52 children aged 4-11 have enrolled and the program is again at capacity!
Over winter the classes were split in four groups of varying skills and over subsequent sessions the confidence & skills across all ages develop. The main focuses have been around fun, basic skills, bike positioning, some simple self-bike checks, riding in groups, and respect for nature and other people.
It’s been great to see the pure enjoyment of the kids (& the parents!!) both during & after the classes.
The progression all the kids have shown has been nothing short of amazing, with many going on to enjoy PACC CX events, and soon AMBC will be better catering for children with course lengths and race duration age-appropriate.
