PACC RFID Chip Timing System

PACC has embarked on a new project to provide better results at our events - all riders in our club-run Time Trials, Cyclo-cross and Kermesse/Criteriums held by PACC will eventually all have their own chip to use this system. This is not an off-the-shelf system but home-assembled by our very own PACC NERD COMMITTEE.

WHAT IS THIS TAG THING? WHERE DOES IT GO?

Each new rider entered in one of our events will be issued with their own 'RFID' Chip.  It comprises a very robust tear-proof plastic tag which has a reinforced metal eyelet. Stuck onto this tag is the foil RFID chip itself.  The tag is issued to you and you only, it can't be shared with a friend.  Once issued to you it's yours to take home and cherish fondly. However you have to remember to bring it along to the next race!  Treat it carefully - don't fold or cut the tag or it will stop working.

The tag must be mounted as horizontally as possible on your seatpost. We will provide a cable tie for this. If you are worried about scratches on your seatpost we recommend you wrap your post with electrical tape before the event or bring along bits of inner tube.

IT LOOKS DORKY. CAN I PUT THE TAG ELSEWHERE ON MY BIKE OR HIDE IT IN MY POCKET?

No. Seatpost and horizontal only. It only works well in certain orientations, and away from your body and bike. So not in a pocket, hanging somewhere else or on a front numberplate. Again, this is how it should look. From the other side this time. nice eh?

HOW MUCH IS THIS TAG THING GOING TO COST ME?

At your first timed event with us you will be allocated a chip for FREE. It's yours to keep!  However if you forget to bring it along to your next race we have to issue you a new one and muck about in the database etc so that will cost you $10 to compensate for volunteer pain and stress on the day.  If you tell us you have lost it before the event, or want some extra tags for all your spare bikes (eg a CX pit bike, or another to live on your TT steed) they will be $6ea.  If you want multiples or spare tags they are all programmed identically for you so you don't have to keep them on certain bikes - they all will have the same unique number that points to you. Aren't you special! ORDER YOUR EXTRA OR REPLACEMENT TAG HERE

I AM SUPER PARANOID ABOUT THIS! WHAT INFORMATION DOES THE CHIP CARRY?

Each rider's information (eg names, DOB, club, emergency contact details - eg all the info you already provide to enter each race) is held in an off-line database, most importantly with your unique ID in cycling which is your CA or MTBA license number. We program a chip with a different unique number which we link to your license number in the database.  Therefore your chip contains no personal information - just a meaningless number that only is useful to us. eg If you lose it, your identity has not been stolen (but please don't lose it, see costs above). At the end of the membership year please ensure you renew your existing membership and therefore keep your current CA/MTBA#, and, not just purchase a new license otherwise your data will become 'unlinked'. Oh, we might have written your name on your tag, to ensure it goes to the right person!

YOU GUYS HAVE GONE ALL TECCHIE AT SIGN ON? WHY IS IT LIKE 1990's STAR TREK?

In the future, we hope to offer a self-service 'sign on' where you just swipe your membership card or timing tag and that's it! In the meantime we will be using laptops/tablets to collect data missing from the database (emergency contact details mostly), check your essential info and capture your scribbly signature on-screen. Please bear with us while we collect this data and be patient at sign on. While CA licenses have your emergency contact details printed on the front, MTBA membership cards do not. The sign-on screen will look just like this and it's your last chance to *check* that you are entered in the correct event and your date of birth is correct:
