A big day on the road for riders and volunteers alike today at the Hector Fletcher Road Race and John Lockwood Handicap.
In unusually perfect weather (unusual as far as recent history of the races goes), riders signed on at Mt Pleasant oval ahead of their races.
Juniors went first with A and B grades starting from the oval with C Grade starting their shorter loop at Springton. Tristan Saunders took out A grade with a sprint finish ahead of Luke Wight and Emerson Nugent. PACC's Olivia Wheeler was clear winner of the B grade and Noah Davies was too strong in C.
The John Lockwood Handicap got underway at 11.00 with scratch rider Karl Evans trying to make up 22 minutes over the starting riders. The 10 Minute group worked together and made up time with 6 riders sprinting to the line. Anthony Foundas took the win. Riders came through thick and fast and Karl was just over a minute behind. Jenny McPherson picked up a Goggleman voucher for fastest female of the day.
A short break and Commissaires were back in the cars behind A - D grades in the Hector Fletcher.
A grade split into two groups early and the lead group had a minute into the second when Tom Kaesler took the KOM. Thomas Allford tried to make a break but was brought back. He still had enough in his legs to be crowned winner after a bunch sprint to the line. Karl Evans backed up for his second race of the day finishing in 14th place. Shaun Lewis still had enough post race for some sick skids on the oval before presentations.
B grade was animated in the first lap with significant attacks occurring in the second. Team USG tried the old one-two and cat and mouse at the last corner resulted in a close win to Iven Bennett over Nicholas Welch.
Three riders fought hard in C with young Fletcher Symonds reigning supreme. D grade was won by Con Bistaras in another sprint finish.
Race Director Mark Robinson did an awesome job orchestrating his first road race. Thanks to Mark and Kelly, Dan Searson, Ben Plush, Kain Gardner, Di Lockwood, Karen Stanton (and her yellow lead car!), Darren Searle, Michael Wheeler, marshals and medics. And also to Chief Comm Will Lyons and team of John Kelly, Ken Gooding, Lyle Baird, Mark Gregory and Paula Hollamby.
Huge thanks to Megan Davis who worked hard behind the scenes leading up to today.
Let's do it again next year.
