Team named for Australian All Schools Championships

30 Oct 2014

Athletics Tasmania has announced the selection of 31 female and 25 male emerging teenage track and field athletes to represent the State at the Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships in Adelaide, South Australia in early December.

Following yesterday's announcement that 72 girls and boys have been chosen for the National Primary Championships, it means that 128 young Tasmanians will officially represent their State in track and field competitions over the next six weeks.

Like the primary team, the secondary athletes were named after the State All Schools Championships and Selection Trials at Penguin last weekend.

The Australian All Schools was first conducted in the mid 1970s and has since become a launching pad for many fine careers not only in athletics but also in other sports - rugby league's Jarryd Hayne is a former gold medallist. But it also serves as a high quality participation oportunity for youngsters who want to experience just that.

AT President Mike Gunson said that the meet provides a great opportunity for Tasmanian athletes to involve themselves in competition at the next level up.

"Whether an athlete is clearly already an emerging talent like Emma Keleher, Russel Taib or Jack Hale or an athlete going to their first Nationals, the chance to challenge themselves in a different environment and against different athletes is extremely valuable," Mr Gunson said.

"Our team this year has exactly that sort of mix and we know that each of them will prepare well over the next five weeks so that they have the best chance of a personal best or perhaps even a trip to the medal podium."
