After the first attempt was cancelled due to bad weather, the rescheduled Hector Fletcher road races and John Handicap were held under sunny skies on Sunday.
In the junior scratch races, Tyson Slater won the D-grade race, Lewis Walker won Junior C-grade, Daniel Di Censo won Junior B-grade and Douglas Beddome took out the honours in Junior A-grade.
The John Lockwood handicap had a large field of 55 entries, with limit heading off at 13 minutes. There were some large groups for the middle markers, and some late scratchings meant that the scratch group was down to two riders. In the end it was Justin Bessell from the 8:30 group who finished first, making a strong break well out from the finish for a deserved win. Jason Anderesch, one of the two scratch markers, did well to get the fastest time of the race (1:15:17).
The afternoon open scratch races had large fields as well, which made for some great racing. In the D-grade race, Daniel Ingham won from Con Bastiras and visiting Mildura-Coomealla rider Rachel Kilmister.
In C-grade the first lap proved decisive, with the first seven riders over the KOM staying away for the rest of the race. Jesse Stokes put in a strong attack on the second lap and won comfortably from Andrew Crowe and Chris Hale.
B-grade was the biggest open grade for the day, making for a fast race. A diminished bunch hit the Warren Rd climb on the second lap and Samuel Barnden and Ashley Dawson, both from Mildura-Coomealla cycling club, got a gap and kept going until the finish with Samuel Barnden crossing the line first. Ben Plush finished third after putting in a late attack to attempt to bridge to the two leaders.
In A-grade, Leo Simmonds and Brad Davies broke away from the field early on, and rode strongly to stay away for the remainder of the race. In the end, Simmonds (recent Norwood CC club champion) won the race with Davies coming in second. From the chasing bunch behind, David Fumpson took third place.
On behalf of Port Adelaide Cycling Club, thank you to all of the volunteers and officials who made the race happen, and to all of the riders for some great racing.
Thanks very much to Di Lockwood, John's wife and PACC supporter for presenting the trophies.
