PACC Sprint Series Round 2

Let’s face it folks, when it comes to action on the velodrome, you can’t really go past Match Sprinting – a one-on-one battle of wits and speed.  And so it was with the second round of PACC’s Sprint Series at the Superdrome last night.  With the addition of visiting AIS Sprint Academy riders, on training camp in Adelaide this week, there was a full field of 32 riders, including World Champion and Olympian Kaarle McCulloch, Australian Kilo Champion James Glasspool and gold medal winning Paralympian Steph Morton.  The event commenced with a flying 200m qualifying and the track seemed fast, with quite a few PB’s being set and the fastest qualifier giving the 70km/h barrier a nudge.  Based on qualifying times, the field was split into 4 groups and following were a number of rounds of one-on-one Match Sprints and 4-up Sprint Derby repechages, leading up to a final Match Sprint in each of the 4 groups.

The D-grade final was always going to be close with only 0.01 separating Paul King and Chris Spence in qualifying.  Spence loves his big gears and was always going to lead it out as early as possible to get on top of it but King, sporting his new Paul King Plumbing skinsuit was laying off nicely.  Into the final straight and it was still anyone’s race and even the AIS Sprint Academy coach, Sean Eadie was impressed with the grunts of exertion as they both threw for the line – Spence victorious by a very small margin.

The C-grade final featured the experienced Sean Hennessy returning to the boards after quite a while out of the sport and a relative newcomer the track – Damien Hogan.  Hogan had ‘punched above his weight’ to get to the final and was always going to have his work cut out for him against the tactical nous of Hennessy.  Despite a valiant effort by Hogan, Hennessy’s superior finishing speed won out on the day.

The B-grade final went more to script with the fastest two qualifiers of the group – Derek Radzikiewicz and Kaarle McCulloch – meeting in the final.  Would the nerves of racing a World Champion and Olympian get to the young U/17 rider?  Would McCulloch’s experience win out?  With Radzikiewicz forced to lead out, McCulloch stalked her prey like a hungry cat after a mouse, waiting for the moment to pounce. Radzikiewicz was the first to launch, perhaps sensing this was to be the day the mouse lived to tell the tale.  Both kicked hard in the back straight and it looked like it was all over for the mouse but Radzikiewicz somehow found the legs to hold McCulloch on the hip around the final bend and was able to just hold on for a very close finish.

The last race of the night – the A-grade final, was down to the big boys – James Glasspool and Mitch Bullen.  Qualifying times were close and there were some rumours of a race between the two that ended with both of them ‘rubber side up’?  The race was quite tactical at the start with both riders using the full width of the track in an attempt to gain some sort of advantage.  At the bell lap the pace was up but Glasspool leading out, was still not 100% committed, continuing to look over his shoulder to gauge the whereabouts of his opponent.  In the back straight, it was like some secret signal had gone off as they both kicked simultaneously – the groans of protests from the carbon bikes clearly audible as they struggled to cope with the increase in power.  Bullen’s closing speed was fantastic and he used the draft to maximum effect, but he was still on the hip in the final bend and it looked like Glasspool would be able to hold on.  However, with a last gasp effort in the final 20m, Bullen was able to pull in front of the tiring Glasspool and take out the victory in a close one.

It was fantastic to such a large field of Sprinters doing what they love on the boards, and there were a few more queuing up to enter so positions for the next round are going to be hot!

A big thank you to the volunteer judges/timekeepers (Renee & Dallas), commentator and lap counter (the multi-tasking Graeme Z), Clerk (Gemma), Commissaire (Will), and to the Sprint Mums for the catering – the Halloween themed cupcakes were awesome!

Next round is November 21 – see you there!
