Athletics NT and Athletics North Queensland will have a Combined North Australia Team at the Oceania Championships. The 2012 Oceania Championships will be held in Cairns, Australia from 27-29 June 2012. Especially for those born in the years 1993, 1994, 1995 or 1996, this is a good opportunity to represent Australia in an international athletics Championship. Interested, please have a look at the following link:
The Northern Australia team will be self-funded but would include athletes who have not been chosen in the Australian Team. Remember the Australian Team will also be self-funded. Just want to clarify that ALL members of the Australian Team will be self-funded – this is no different from the proposed North Australia Team.
In terms of selection, Entry Standards and Age Limitations need to be strictly adhered to for selection to the “North Australian Team”. The Australian Team is expected to be named after the completion of the All Comers/Student Games in Townsville on the 5/6 May. In terms of the North Australia Team this merely opens the door for additional people to compete at the Oceania Championships. The athletes in this team may have nominated on-line for the Australian Team (and not selected) but will also need to put an expression of interest into either ANQ or ANT. Athletics Australia will supply all names and details of those who have not been selected in the Australian Team to the relevant office so that they may consider nominating for the North Australian Team. Thus, if interested in competing at the Oceania Championships, this opportunity may give you more possibilities.
Accommodation will be at the Oceania Championships Athletes’ Village (Serpents – Nomads) at a cost of $50.00 per person per night – this will include all meals and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Athletes could arrive on Monday 25th June or Tuesday 26th June and Depart on Saturday 30th June or according to their event schedule. Or you can look for your own accommodation if you prefer.
Uniforms: depending on numbers you may also be eligible for adidias clothing, although this cannot be confirmed until after the final entries close.
All team members would be subject to the same behaviour and disciplinary conditions as selected athletes and would ostensibly be treated in the same light as all other competing athletes – they would be eligible for medals in the Under 20 and Open Age Categories. Entries would be entered in the same way as they are for all other Member Federation teams.
The Exhibition events will still be held alongside the Oceania Athletics Association Championships however will not receive Championship medals.
ANQ has kindly put together an entry form about the Northern Australian Team at the Oceania Area Championships that you will need to use to express your interest. Please email Dayne O´Hara at email@example.com if you are interested
