Reward for our Junior Athletes!

The World Youth Athletics Championships in Lille (France) have recently drawn to a close, with our Australian junior athletes achieving fantastic results. Most athletes were in their debut competing for the green and gold in a competition which is fast becoming the benchmark for the future in our Australian Track & Field Olympics Team.

Prior to the commencement of the Championships, athletes had the opportunity to explore the pure beauty that France has to offer before they settled in to the seriousness of track life that they are growing to become accustomed to for their exciting career's ahead.

Jake Stein, 17, has become the first Australian to win the youth Octathlon Championships (8 events).  With a total score of 6491 points, he managed to perform 6 personal bests over the two day competition.  This was a fantastic result and followed on from his win in the U18 Australian Decathlon Championships.

Adding to Australia’s glory on day two was Monique Cilione (VIC), who with a personal best of 52.77m won a Bronze medal on international debut in the Girl’s Javelin Throw.  Monique has gone through Little Athletics at Keilor and it is great to see one of our own ex little athletes performing so well.

Adding excitement to these two medals, Australia has managed to have two boys race in the final of the 100m.  This is the first time ever that Australia has made it to the finals of this event, so to have two boys in this race is a fantastic achievement.  Congratulations to Hugh Donovan (Qld) – 5th in 10.62 and Jarrod Geddes (NSW) – 6th in 10.63.  Keep an eye out for these boys in the future.

The final day of competition featured Monica Brennan (VIC) finishing a strong 7th in the 200m Women’s Final - a great effort. Monica, just like Monique, came up through the ranks competing in Little Athletics with the Diamond Valley Centre.

Our juniors will head home with a total of 4 medals - Gold for Jake Stein (Octathon), Silver for Liz Parnov (Pole Vault) and Sarah Carli (Silver, 400mH) and finally Bronze for Monique Cilione (Javelin). To the teams credit they picked up an additional 13 top eight performances.

From all of us at Little Athletics Victoria - congratulations to the entire Australian Youth Team!
