Sports In Focus Logo

Little Athletics Victoria wishes to congratulate all participants on their performances during the running of the State Relay Championships. The sportsmanship shown amongst the athletes was inspiring and should be highly commended.

Our appreciation of today is extended to all officials and families for their continued support of their athletes and ongoing ventures across the state, to enable these Championships to exist.

Special mention goes out to Doncaster on their assistance in making their venue available and ready at such short notice.

We wish those competing at their various Region events in two weeks time all the best in their events and we hope that we have the opportunity to see your friendly faces at the State Track and Field Championships, on the 19/20th March at Olympic Park, Melbourne.

We hope that you have a safe trip home.

State Championships Timetable - AVAILABLE HERE

The office received a telephone call from Olympic Park Trust on the afternoon of Thursday 13 January, 2011 to advise that we would not be able to use Olympic Park for the State Relay Championships.

The reason behind this situation is that Olympic Park is currently being resurfaced due to the wear and tear of the existing track and given the adverse weather and other ongoing development issues, they have advised it will not be ready by the due date of Sunday 06 February.

Little Athletics Victoria was not aware the venue was even being considered for a resurface given the moving to Albert Park as the new home of athletics late in the year, therefore the news came as a complete surprise and subsequently has thrown ongoing plans into chaos the last few days.

Subsequently we have had to source a new venue for the event and after assessing all possible candidates and reviewing availability, travel, parking, accommodation, toilets and more we have confirmed Doncaster.

It was not possible to move the date as the Association, Regions, Centres and families alike have all made existing plans and with such short notice it would not be appropriate for all concerned to change the date. It seemed far less damaging to secure an alternative venue given the circumstances.

On behalf of the Board of Management we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause your Centre and families travelling to the event, and for the inability to conduct the Championships at Olympic Park. On this occasion the situation is out of our control.

Region Relay Logo

These Championships were held at a Region level in December where teams have to qualify or be progressed into State Championships.

The Relay Championships is our main team competition for the season. This is the only championship where boys and girls can run against each other and also be on the same team.  Athletes carry a baton, which they pass onto the next member of their team.

Athletes can compete in a maximum of three (3) team events.

These three events can be in a 'combination' of any of the following:

  • 4 x 100m (Male/Female and/or Mixed)
  • 4 x 200m (Male/Female and/or Mixed)
  • Medley(Mixed Age, Male/Female) - also referred too as 800 sprint medley

Athletes can compete in single sex teams, mixed sex teams or mixed aged teams. A Mixed sex team is made up of 2 girls and 2 boys.

The mixed aged team is made up of one athlete from each age group. The age break up for this event is:

  • Under 9 - Under 12
  • Under 13 - Under 15 - A second U13 is chosen to make up the team of four (4).

The Medley event (800m sprint Medley), consist of the following legs:

  • 2 x 100m
  • 1 x 200m
  • 1 x 400m
