Athletes of the Year Announced!!

Last night, Athletics Tasmania hosted its annual Athlete of the Year Party, to celebrate the 2009/2010 season.

Sandy Bay athletes Tristan Thomas and Hanny Allston took home the coveted open men and open women crowns.  Thomas's year was highlighted by his bronze medal at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Athletics last August, as part of the Australian 4 x 400m relay team.  At the same championships, Thomas also made the semi finals of his pet event, the 400m hurdles, in which also claimed the World University Games title.

For Allston, it was a transition year from orienteering to running, for the 24 year old.  Her list of victories highly impressive, including the Australian Mountain Running title, Melbourne Half Marathon, Hobart Run the Bridge, Point to Pinnacle and a gold medal in the Tasmanian half marathon titles.  Allston also had solid performances on the track over 3000m and 5000m, including the NSW 5000m Championships. 

Held at Wellers Inn, the evening also paid tribute to the top athletes in under 16, under 18, under 20 and Tasmanian Masters Association athletes.  The individual disciplines were also acknowledged, with the top sprinters, distance athletes, jumpers and throwers identified by the independent selection panel.

Under 16 Women - Danielle McConnell (Eastern Suburbs)
Tasmanian Masters Athlete - Suzy Cole
Men Sprints - Tristan Thomas (Sandy Bay)
Women Sprints - Danielle Taylor (Western Suburbs)
Men Distance - Ryan Foster (Sandy Bay)
Women Distance - Hanny Allston (Sandy Bay)
Men Jumps - Joel Mason (Eastern Suburbs)

The season took into consideration track and field performances, along with road and cross country events held from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010.
