Athletics Tasmania Announces Relay Squad

Athletics Tasmania, in conjunction with the ATFCA and TIS has established a state-wide relay program for the forthcoming summer track & field season.

In July, Athletics Tasmania invited a number of athletes in the following age groups at 31 December 2009 and for the applicable relays;

  • Under 16 (4 x 100 and 4 x 200)
  • Under 18 (4 x 100 and 4 x 400)
  • Under 20 (4 x 100 and 4 x 400)

There is the likelihood of the programme that Under 14 and Open age groups will be introduced, but the policies for these age groups are being determined due to a number of factors in these particular age groups.

The initial focus will be on preparation for the UTAS All Schools and Youth Championships to be held in Hobart in December 2009 but it is hoped that the concept can continue beyond this season, including competitive teams at events such as the Briggs Athletics Classic and other national level events.

The aims of the program are as follows;

1.            Improve the efficiency of relay teams representing Tasmania

2.            Provide regular opportunities for athletes and coaches to train together on relay practice

3.            Feed this improvement to clubs through the training and education of athletes and coaches

4.            Provide an opportunity for Tasmanian athletes to become part of Athletics Australia relay squads

5.            Improve the profile of sprinting in Tasmania

The program will be a state-wide programme, but for practical purposes will also have a regional focus. It is proposed that 2 regions will be established - North/North West and South. Each region will have a coordinator/coach with personal coaches acting, if they wish, as assistant coaches.  The basis for this approach is to minimise the likelihood of costs and travel.  Peter Fortune as TIS state performance coordinator will be involved.

Athletics Tasmania is in the process of selecting coaches, training and other relevant detail.  When these details are available you will be advised.

The first planned activity for the Athletics Tasmania Relay Squad will be on September 12 and 13 in Hobart, where the first training session will take place.

Athletics Tasmania is pleased to have Darren Alomes as the program coordinator.  Any queries please contact Darren on 0409 406 095 or e-mail at darren_alomes@bigpond.com.
