STATE SECONDARY CROSS COUNTRY TEAM NAMED FOR
NATIONAL TITLES AT PONTVILLE

Athletics Tasmania today announced the composition of the Tasmanian Team
to contest the School Sport Australia and Telstra Australian Cross Country
Championships to be held at the Pontville Sports Complex and Equestrian Park
at Brighton in Tasmania from 25 to 27 August.

The 60 strong squad complements the primary schools team announced
yesterday. The Tasmanian senior team will be announced over the weekend.
The team will compete in the national individual and team championships
which will be conducted on Saturday 26 August and then a relay and time trial
competition on the following day.

The team includes Launceston College’s Geoff Cassidy who was a member of
the Tasmanian team which won the under 20 teams bronze medal in 2005;
reigning national under 17 3000 metres track champion Karinna Fyfe (Scotch
Oakburn) and national youth distance squad member, Josh Harris (Brooks
High).

Two athletes with international experience are also included – Ryan Foster
(Hutchins) who competed in the 2005 World Youth Championships and Libby
Clarke (Scotch Oakburn) who was a member of the 2006 Australian Schools
Cross Country Team, selected from last year’s Championships.
Launceston’s Scotch Oakburn College is the biggest contributor to the team
with seven members, followed by Launceston Grammar and The Friends
School, both with six.

A total of 28 Tasmanian schools are represented in the secondary section of the
team.

The championships are part of a huge weekend of athletics at the end of
August, which also incorporates the Telstra Australian open cross country
championships and the SSA Primary Schools Exchange at Brighton, and the
Australian Road Walking Championships in the grounds of the Derwent
Entertainment Centre.
