THOMAS SELECTED FOR ATHLETICS WORLD CUP

Sandy Bay athlete Tristan Thomas, has been selected on the Oceania
Team for the World Cup in Athletics to be held in Athens on 16 and 17
September 2006.

The Commonwealth Games semi finalist is selected for his specialist
event the 400 metres hurdles and will be included in the squad for the
4x400m relay.

Thomas, who is based at the AIS in Canberra, is currently training on the
Gold Coast in preparation for the Cup, which is a competition between
five continental area and four national teams.

Athletics Tasmania President Brian Roe, who is also the manager of the
Oceania Team, said that the selection of Thomas is a reflection of his
emerging talent.

“Tristan had a great season in 2005-06, producing personal bests when it
counted – both to make the Commonwealth Games Team and to progress
from the heats to the semi finals. He will be a valuable member of the
World Cup Team,” Roe said.

“Both his Tasmanian coach, Rita Whitehouse and AIS mentor Craig
Hilliard are to be commended for developing an athlete who is ready to
perform when needed.”

Thomas will also compete in an international meeting in Japan on his way
back to Australia after the World Cup.
