Tasmanian’s Shine in International Championships

Tasmanian athlete of the year, Tristan Thomas, has become the World University Champion in the 400m hurdles.

Thomas, who has been the form Australian athlete on the track in 2009, clocked 48.75sec, the second fastest time of his career in his pet event.

It was Australia’s third gold medal at the 2009 World University Championships, in Belgrade.

With just five weeks to go until the world’s best assemble in Berlin, Thomas is demonstrating ominous form ahead of his first world championships campaign.

Japan’s Yoshida Kazuaki claimed silver in 50.24s, followed by Kazakhstan’s Leptikov Viktor who took bronze with 50.94s.

While at the World Youth Championships in Sudtirol, Italy, Huw Peacock has placed 5th in the final of the hammer.  After qualifying 10th for the final, the TIS athlete launched a mammoth 70.66m, setting a new personal best and Tasmanian under 18 record in the process.

Following in the footsteps of his older brother Hamish, Huw produced his best effort on his sixth and final attempt, elevating him up the ladder.  The competition was won by China’s Hongqiu Chen who threw 74.04m.
