2009 Bridgewater Mile

20 Feb 2009

The 2nd annual Bridgewater Mile has been run and won, with Grant Page and Donna MacFarlane retaining their titles on Greenpoint Road.

This years event grew into a food festival, with flavours from Germany, Ethiopia and Australia on hand.

A two lap course covering Greenpoint Road and Eddington St was torn up by close to 50 runners, looking to share in $550 in prizemoney.

Page's winning time of 4:27.53 put him well clear of a fast finishing Phil McConnon who had a blinding run to fly past training partner Damon Court in the final metres to take second in 4:38.13.  Dominic Anastasio was fourth, followed by Paul Luttrell and Alex Humphrey who shared in the money.

Mel Daniels ran bravely, keeping up with MacFarlane in the first half of the race, before the Beijing Olympian took off in the back end of the race to win the women's race in 4:48.35.  Natasha Fitzpatrick hung on for third and Rosie Woodworth took home $40 for her troubles in fourth.

A community event with free entry was also held shortly after the main race, with giveaways from Asics and Cadbury, which resulted in a well supported event.

Thanks must go to Brighton City Council and the local community for making the event possible.
