Tassie Bags a Swag on Day 4

04 Dec 2008

Tasmania absolutely dominated the under 14 girls hammer throw yesterday morning, taking home the gold and bronze medals.

Danielle McConnell hurled the hammer 37.99m to win the competition, which included three different nationalities.  While still 3m short of her personal best, it was a strong performance in the largest competition of her young career.

Fellow Eastern Suburbs Athletics Club member Rebecca Direen produced a new personal best of 37.12m to win bronze, with less than a metre between the medal winners.  Erin Rowbottom also threw a new personal best of 28.52m to place 10th in the event.

The penultimate event on the program last night was the girls 18/19 years, with North Wests Jayne Engwerda winning a bronze medal, behind a pair from New Zealand.

800m runners performed well in preliminary events, with Nathan Morey, Dom Anastasio and Allie Britton all progressing through to their respective age group 800m finals to be run tomorrow.  Morey won his tactical heat, with Anastasio comfortably second in his.  While Britton sliced 2 seconds off her lifetime best to place 4th in her heat and progress to the final as one of the fastest non automatic qualifiers.

Tiffany Hendricks rounded out a sensational meet for her, placing 6th in the 200m final and again breaking her age group state record, clocking 26.15sec.  However, again the winds were too excessive and the time won’t stand as a new record.

Tasmania’s medal tally in track & field now stands at 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze, with plenty more potential to come.
