MacFarlane Ambassador for All Schools

03 Oct 2008

Beijing Olympian Donna MacFarlane is encouraging secondary students to get involved in the 2008 Tasmanian All Schools Track & Field.

MacFarlane who finished the 2008 International Athletics season with the 8th fastest time in the world over the 3000m Steeplechase, began her career running school events.

“I remember participating for my school at the Tasmanian All Schools Track & Field.  They were good times, and since then, I’ve been able to enjoy many great opportunities around the world, through athletics.”

MacFarlane insisted it’s not just about winning, but being a part of the active lifestyle that athletics can provide.  “My memories aren’t necessarily about winning school events, more so about taking part and enjoying the environment.”

The Tasmanian All Schools Track & Field will be at the Domain Athletics Centre in Hobart on October 25/26.

Schools will also have the opportunity to win $500, simply by entering students.  “We’ve decided to provide a cash incentive this year.  The secondary school who enters the most students, per capita of their school population, will take home $500 and a perpetual shield,” MacFarlane announced.

The incentive offer is open to all Tasmanian schools who teach grades 7-12.  Schools are also encouraged to bring their tents to create a carnival atmosphere.

While there are many school athletics competitions on at this time of year, the Tasmanian All Schools Track & Field, also doubles as the selection trial for secondary students to the Pacific School Games.  Tasmania will be looking to send a team of close to 100 secondary age students away to the ‘PSGs’ in Canberra, from November 30 to December 6.

Entries are open online now here, at
$11.50 per student.
