More Medals and Records in Townsville

07 Dec 2013

Sandy Bay Harrier, Jesse Usoalii has broken three Tasmanian records whilst winning the bronze medal in the under 18 boys 100 metres final at the Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships in Townsville today.

It was one of three bronze medals won by the Tasmanian Team on day two of the Championships, adding to the two golds and another bronze collected on the opening evening of competition on Friday.

The Hutchins schoolboy ran a .16 second personal best with a legal tailwind of 1.3 metres per second. His time of 10.67 missed the silver by just thousandths but provided some pretty good consolation prizes in the form of the under 18, under 19 and under 20 state records.

The previous under 18 mark was jointly held by Simon Bresnehan and Scott Wells at 10.81 and the under 19 by Troy Bennett at 10.79. The under 20 record which Usoalii nudged by the barest of margins was also jointly held by David Thom and the current Australian Sports Commission CEO, Simon Hollingsworth at 10.68.

OVA’s Jacob Despard finished sixth in the final in a time of 10.86, just a hundredth outside the personal best he recorded when qualifying fourth fastest.

Eastern Suburbs athletes Emma Keleher and Hugh Nicklason were Tasmania’s other medallists on day two.

Keleher backed up from her Friday night victory in the under 16 girls hammer with a bronze in the same event in the under 18 age group with a distance of 50.94m.

Nicklason picked up another national bronze in the under 18 1500 metres in 4.02.07.

Jarrod Foale was impressive in his first national championships taking fourth in the under 18 long jump. His opening jump of 6.33m (-1.6) was his best and eventually missed the bronze medal by just 8cm.

Eastern Suburbs’ Alice Cox set a personal best of 40.76m in the under 16 discus just missing both a medal dais and the state age record.

Another Eastern Suburbs athlete Samantha Lind was also a  fourth placegetter with a time of 57.16 in the under 18 400 metres, a race in which OVA’s Maddy Scott finished sixth in 57.60, just outside the personal best of 57.38 she set in the heats.

The girls later joined Lillian Castle and Caitlin Newson to agonisingly miss bronze in the 4x100 metres relay final by a whisker. Their time of 48.62 was just a hundredth behind Victoria.

Newson had earlier set a personal best of 12.38 (0.5) in qualifying for the 100 metres final, in which she finished equal sixth in a windy 12.37.

North West’s twins  Frances  and Lillian Lyall both made the top eight in the under 14 girls 800 metres with Frances fourth in 2.18.98 just outside her recently set state record whilst her sister finished eighth in 2.25.87

Other top eight finishes today came from:
