Celebration of the Life of Max Cherry

05 May 2008

The Athletics Tasmania family gathered together on Sunday May 4 to celebrate the life of Max.

People of all ages shared stories they had of experienced with the guru of Tasmanian athletics.  Noel Ruddock spoke of training with Max as an athlete over 60 years ago, while many whom Max had coached, got up and spoke of the inspiration that they received from Max.

Perhaps Ryan Foster summed up the effect that Max has left on the Athletics Tasmania family the best.  "One day, I'll be up here at the Domain, coaching my own little squad and I'll tell them 'I use to be coached by Max Cherry, so toughen up."

A passionate group are getting together to raise funds for a bronze statue to be erected of Max in honour of his lifelong dedication to the sport.  If you are interested in being involved, please contact richard@tasathletics.org.au.

RIP Max Cherry.
