Launceston Ten to host Tasmanian 10km Road Championships in 2008

Athletics Tasmania are excited to announce that the Tasmanian 10km Road championships will this year be incorporated within Tasmania's newest 10km road race the B&E Launceston Ten hosted by Events South.

The prestigious event to be held in Launceston on July 20, will see the first home state runners over the line being crowned as 2008 Tasmanian men’s and women’s 10km road champions.

“The Launceston Ten produced the quickest 10km times in Australia in 2007.  We expect that the 2008 B&E Launceston Ten will again be very fast.  This, along with the opportunity to race against Australia's elite over the 10km distance should prove to be a great attraction for Tasmania's athletes,” said race organiser Kim Gillard of Events South.

AT’s Development & Marketing Co-ordinator, Richard Welsh participated in the 2007 event and was impressed.

“The winning time from last year’s inaugural race was the quickest seen over the distance in Australia since 2003 and with the excellent organization and promotion it was immediately clear that the race would quickly take an important place on the national road running calendar, “ Welsh said

“With 2008 being an Olympic year, it’s more than possible the runners will go even faster.”

This year’s race conducted and organised by Events South, boasts over $23,000 in prizemoney.

The Tasmanian 10km road championships in the over 40, under 23 and under 20 age groups will also now be contested within the Launceston Ten.

Entries open for B & E Launceston Ten on April 24.
