New Tasmanian Record to Peacock

World Champs Qualifier and State Record for Tasmanian Athletes

Tasmanian athletes have gained a world championship qualifier and set a new state record at the IAAF Melbourne World Challenge on 6th April.

Hamish Peacock was in career best form, throwing the 800gram javelin 79.80m, further than any Tasmanian has previously.

The world championships qualifying mark of 81.00m continues to tease the TIS athlete.

“It was great to get a PB and new state record, but in doing so I only came 4th which shows how high quality the competition was,” Peacock said.

Ahead of Peacock was Olympic finalist Jarrod Bannister, Chinese champion Qinggong Zhao and winner Stuart Farquhar of New Zealand who was the winner with 81.07m.

Tristan Thomas ran a seasons best of 49.60 seconds in the men’s 400m hurdles, to place second behind US athlete Justin Gaymon.  His time was spot on the B qualifying mark for this years World Championships in Moscow.

It completed a return from injury this season, with the Olympic semi finalist spending the first part of the domestic season recovering from a hamstring strain he received competing at the North West Christmas Carnivals in December. 

A win next week at the Australian championships in Sydney should see him named in the World Championships team for August, allowing the world championships bronze medalist a long period to prepare for the years major championships.

State 400m champion Abbey de la Motte ran a seasons best of 54.73 to finish in 5th place in the women’s 400m. 

Launceston training partners Josh Harris, Pat Smith and James Hansen were outside their best times in distance races.  Hansen clocked 3:47.05 for 8th in the men’s 1500m.  While Smith was 10th in the men’s 5000m with 14:47.84, with Harris 11th in 14:53.10.
