Briggs Athletics Classic – Ping, Power and Partnerships

To jump takes ‘ping’, to sprint takes ‘power’ and relays take ‘partnerships’.  On Friday night, spectators will get it all.

The Australian 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m championships will be held in conjunction with the Briggs Athletics Classic, providing a balance to the meet that is rapidly becoming one of the deepest quality track & field meets our current generation has witnessed.

The countries best sprinters won’t be the only ones competing, as Southern Football League clubs, North Hobart, Hobart, Kingborough, Brighton, Glenorchy and the TFL Umpires Association have all confirmed in the Sporting Teams 4 x 100m.  The event has been organised to pit the teams against each other in the middle of the off season, to battle out for the title of southern Tasmania’s fastest footy team.

North Hobart’s Cameron Day says “it will be an event to look forward to, to see who is the fastest premier league footy club in Southern Tasmania.  Naturally, in a game of football it helps to be a fast runner and it would be great to see more footy players doing athletics in the Summer.”  The sporting clubs go head to head at 6:30pm.

After running a swift 20.79sec for the 200m at the Sydney Track Classic on Saturday night, New South Welshman Henry Mitchell will be out to run a personal best in the 100m, as he will go against Victorian Joshua Ross#2 and many of Tasmania’s younger speedsters.

The Men’s 400m Hurdles is bound to be one of interest for spectators to watch.  It features the current Australian Champion Brendan Cole and Under 20 Australian Champion Sam Carson.

Recently announced TIS scholarship holder Morgan Whiley will lap it up in the 400m, as she aims to carry on where she was this time last season.  Whiley had a brilliant season last summer, winning the Sydney A-Series and running a personal best of 53.80 at the Melbourne A-Series.  Unfortunately for the Devonport girl, she fell ill at the Australian Championships and withdrew, however after a solid winter’s training it will be exciting if her dream of Olympic representation can come to fruition as she aims to qualify this domestic season.

Athletics Tasmania will host a media launch at the Domain Athletics Centre on Thursday January 17 (tomorrow), featuring athletes competing at the Briggs Athletics Classic.  The time will be confirmed via a media alert in the morning.

The weather forecast is for fine and 24, perfect to bring a picnic hamper and sit on the hill at the Domain Athletics Centre, with competition running from 5:45 – 8:45.

Tickets available from Athletics Tasmania www.tasathletics.org.au, associated clubs and Centretainment.
