MORE PEACOCK GOLD IN NATIONAL ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

It was a case of more gold for the Peacock household on day two of the 2007 Australian All Schools and Youth Athletics Championships in Sydney today (Friday), with both brothers - Hamish and Huw, snaring victories.

Hamish, 17, demonstrated emphatically why he become a World Youth Championships silver medallist earlier in the year, by smashing the meet record three times during today’s under 18 boy’s javelin final and leaving his talented opponents well in his wake.

The Rosny College student threw the 700gm spear 76.23m, just short of the personal best he set in Ostrava in the Czech Republic in July to build on the bronze he won in Thursday’s discus competition.

And then not even a vicious Sydney summer rain and thunder storm which caused the entire meet to be placed on hold for nearly an hour, could halt the march through the Championships for young brother, Huw.

The 15 year old, who yesterday picked up gold in the under 16 hammer, again dominated winning the shot put in the same age category with a personal best of 17.81m with the 4kg implement, despite the event being stopped for around 45 minutes midway through the six rounds.

Tasmania picked up a bronze during the morning session of today’s competition, when Nationals debutant, New Town High student, Joel Mason jumped 7cm over his best to clear 1.88m and take third in the under 16 boy’s high jump.

In other finals contested today, Daniel Boatwright (javelin) and Oscar Phillips (3000m) both made the top eight of their under 17 events, finishing fifth and eighth respectively with performances of 55.92m and 9:13.17

Meanwhile, Launceston Grammar’s Darcey Lahey produced another gutsy personal best of 55.87 to qualify for the final of the under 14 boy’s 400m.

The Championships continue until Sunday evening.
