PRIMARY SCHOOLS NATIONAL TRACK & FIELD EXCHANGE – Day 2 Competition Wrap

The 2007 School Sport Australia Track & Field Exchange continued in Launceston today, drawing a close to all individual events.

The first day of summer brought pleasant conditions and some brilliant competition from Australia’s fittest primary aged students.

After sitting second overnight in the 11 year old boys multi event, Lachlan Weller of Burnie performed gallantly, finishing second overall and taking Tasmania’s first individual medal of the exchange.  Weller wore his heart on his sleeve and fought like a devil on the final lap of the 800m to move from 5th position to cross in second place and secure the silver medal.

The next event on the track was the multi event of the 11 year girls 800m, which featured Tasmania’s Georgia Parry.  Parry was sitting in 4th place after day 1 of competition.  The Hobart based student performed a personal best performance in the shot put and then ran the race of her life in the 800m.  Sitting in third position at the bell, Parry stormed to the lead as she ran past her team mates tent on the backstraight to the delight of her home crowd.

The strain showed on her face after two days of national level competition but she fought on, running away with the 800m victory to earn enough points to take second overall and earn a silver record to add to Tasmania’s growing medal tally.

On a national level, the larger states continued to win medals and the following School Sport Australia Track & Field Exchange meet records were broken;

*      Girls 12 years Multi event – 1197 points (previously 1146) – Jessica Handsaker

*      Girls 10 years Shot Put (2kg) – 12.44m (previously 12.24m) – Juanita Lloyd

*      Girls 11 years Discus (740gr) – 39.42 (previously 38.34m) – Paletina Lemi

Paletina Lemi completing a record sweet of the 11 years girls throwing events after breaking the Shot Put record on day 1 at St Leonards.

Students will be rewarded with an excursion on Sunday morning before competition begins again at St Leonards again at 1:30pm with a series of fun relays.

At 4pm this afternoon, the Tasmanian Club Championships were held with 8 clubs taking part in Open Men, Open Women and the mixed under 16 division.  Results will be available in due course at www.tasathletics.org.au
