3 Tasmanian's Get Youth Olympic Call Up

06 Dec 2012

The Australian Olympic Committee has today announced three Tasmanian's in the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival.

Ulverstone's Kale Adam's will join Hobart's Hugh Nicklason and Julia Minnucci in a squad of 60 Australian youth athletes to attend the festival in Sydney from January 16-20.

Conducted bi-annually, the Australian Youth Olympic Festival involves 30 countries in 17 sports and was held for the first time in 2001.

It is the first Australian call up for all three athletes, following medal winning performances at Australian Junior and Australian All Schools Championships this year.

16 year old Adam's was selected in the 2000m steeplechase, following his bronze medal effort on the opening night of the Australian All Schools in Hobart last week.  Trained by Mike Gunson and a member of the North West Athletics Club, Adam's has been a regular placegetter at Australian Championships for the past three seasons.

Hugh Nicklason has been one of the top improvers in the past 12 months.  After winning the Australian Under 17 1500m title in March this year, Nicklason is a ruthless racer, proven by his silver medal at the Australian All Schools on Sunday over 800m, where he bolted through the opening lap in 53seconds, before running a personal best of 1:52.47.  16 year old Nicklason was selected in both the 800m and 1500m.

Fellow Eastern Suburbs and Jy Webb trained athlete Julia Minnucci was selected for the 800m and the Swedish Relay.  The 17 year old has been on a similar steep improvement curve as Nicklason, following her breakthrough performances at the Australian Junior Championships last season.
