<04.11.07> - Tasmanian All Schools Track & Field Final Wrap

05 Nov 2007

The 2007 Tasmanian All Schools Track & Field competition concluded today at the Domain Athletics Centre in Hobart.

As athletes warmed up for their first events this morning, the rain struggled to hit the ground, as the wind kept the rain somewhat horizontal.

Allie Britton continued to add to her pile of victories in recent weeks, taking out the Under 16 Women’s 400m, 800m and 1500m treble.  The Mackillop College student who has been training with Max Cherry has had some brilliant battles with Jess Morey of Mt Carmel at recent SKO and SATIS competitions, but performed when it counted this weekend, winning three Tasmanian titles.

The sole Sheffield High representative at this years competition was Ashleigh Corbett in the Under 15 division.  Running in the aesthetically pleasing red and yellow stripe strip which is rarely seen on the track, the youngster also took the treble, this time in the sprints winning the 100m, 200m and 400m events.  The longer race was a dramatic 4/100ths victory as she stumbled to the lead in the final 3m to overtake Miranda Allender, who was fresh from the airport after taking out the Australian Poetry Under 16 section in Sydney last night.

Hamish Peacock (Rosny College) was at it again the Under 18 Javelin.  The current World Youth Championships Silver medalist sent the 700gr spear 70.35m ahead of Under 17 reigning Australian All Schools Champion Daniel Boatwright (Kingsmeadows High).  Hamish also qualified for the Under 18 Discuss finishing well clear of BJ Lamb (Taroona High) with 52.06m.

Today a state record was set in the field, this time by Rebecca Direen (The Friends School) in the Under 14 3kg Shot Put.  Direen, also qualifying to represent Tasmania at next months Australian Youth and All Schools Championships for the first time.

One of the final races of the 3 day competition provided some of the greatest entertainment of the weekend.  After the athletes request to merge the Under 18 and Under 20 800m fields together, to allow for greater competition was approved by officials, the race began.  It featured the majority of the previous nights field in the 1500m, which was one of the highlights on the program.  After running a massive personal best at Interclub a week prior, Nathan Morey (Guilford Young) lead the field, backing his strength over two laps and protecting his competitors from the icy wind.  The Old Virgilians Athletic Club member continued to pour on the pace with only training partner and school mate Tom Beard able to challenge in the straight.  After winning the 1500m the night before, Beard couldn’t shave the margin, as Morey won by more than 2 seconds.

Athletics Tasmania proclaimed Libby Clarke and Tom Beard the athletes of the meeting.  Libby Clarke for her State record in the 2000m Steeplechase on Friday night and Tom Beard for his stellar run to beat the strongest field of the weekend in the 1500m on Saturday evening.

The full Tasmanian team for the Australian Youth and All Schools Championships to be held in Sydney from December 6-9 will be announced in the coming week,
