Hanny Allston today won the 2007 Samsung Melbourne Marathon in a time of 2.40.34.

The 2006 Tasmanian Institute of Sport athlete of the year improved her personal best by 6 minutes, in winning the Cadbury Marathon earlier this year.

In only her second race over the distance, Allston now stands second on the 2007 Australian Ranking list for the event, behind national record holder Benita Johnson.

In an event where preparation and planning is critical, 21 year old Allston is a refreshing breath of air, as she only decided to run in Melbourne three weeks ago.  “I’m really happy with my run today, especially as it was only a spur of the moment decision to run.”

“Physically I felt really good throughout the race.  I had no nerves on the start line, it was actually really inspiring to be around so many other runners.”

“A lead group of four athletes were together at the halfway mark and 10km later, Allston had a 1min 30sec advantage over the rest of the field.  “I didn’t really make a move, but part of the course was run in an area near where my aunt lives, so I had done a lot of training around there.  I knew there were some rolling hills around and thought I would make the most of my strength and then I noticed no one else was left around me,” the Sandy Bay Harrier Club athlete said.

Finishing the race inside the great MCG, Allston was met by many family and friends, as she finished ahead of Queenslander Helen Stanton (2.41.51) and Belinda Shipp (2.42.22) of NSW.
