Garmin Australian Mt Running Championships

04 Apr 2012

On Sunday April 29, Australia's best mountain runners will descend upon Hobart, for the Garmin Australian Mt Running Championships.

Given Hobart's Mt Wellington stands at 1277m, it was the perfect venue for this years event, in a year that requires runners in the open men's race to ascend 1200m, in 12 kilometres.

The championships were last held in Tasmania in 1998, with runners also taking on Mt Wellington.  This months event will also be the primary selection event for the Australian team to attend the World Mt Running Championships, to be held in Temu, Italy on September 2.

Races will be held over three distances, with various ages and genders fighting out for national glory;

4km - under 20 women and women W55, W60, W65 and over (starting at the Springs)
8km - under 20 men and men M55, M60, M65, M70 and over, open women and women W35, W40, W45 and W50 (starting at Fern Tree)
12km - 12 kms for open men and men M40, M45 and M50 (starting at The Waterworks)

Tasmanian athletes have typically faired very well at mountain running, with Jordan Harries representing Australia at the world championships last year, along with names like Hanny Allston and Louise Fairfax being national medalists.

For the first time, industry leading GPS provider Garmin, have joined up with the event as the major partner, with the event being presented by Athletics Tasmania, Athletics Australia, Australian Mountain Running Association and the Northern Suburbs Athletics Club.
