MACFARLANE AND HICKS AGAIN TASMANIA’S NUMBER ONE ATHLETES

Donna MacFarlane and Graham Hicks have retained their crowns as Tasmania’s leading athletes after being announced as the senior Athletes of the Year at Athletics Tasmania’s annual awards dinner in Launceston tonight (Saturday).

The awards recognise high level achievement by Tasmania’s best athletes during the period from 1 April 2006 to 31 March 2007.

MacFarlane achieved a top ten ranking in her pet event, the 3000m steeplechase, in all three recognised world ranking lists for the calendar year 2006 and has continued that success in 2007 with victory in the Australian Championships and selection for August’s World Championships in Osaka.

Hicks has continued to make good progress in the discus – one of the strongest events in terms of depth in Australia, winning the bronze medal at the Nationals.

Eastern Suburbs’ Hamish Peacock who last week won the silver medal in the javelin at the World Youth Championships, heads an impressive list of under age winners which also includes his younger brother Huw, who won the under 16 category and national junior hammer champion Todd Hodgetts (Newstead Harriers) who picked up the under 20 male award.
