PEACOCK PASSES FIRST TEST AT WORLD LEVEL
Outstanding young Tasmanian javelin thrower, Hamish Peacock, has passed the first test of his international career.
The 16 year old, TIS scholarship holder produced a personal best throw of 74.86m to qualify in second position for tonight’s boy’s javelin final at the IAAF World Youth (Under 18) Championships in Ostrava in the Czech Republic.
Peacock improved his best mark with the 700gm implement by 28cm to reach the automatic qualifying mark with the second of his allowed three three trials.
As expected two of those ranked ahead of him on the current youth world list, Tuomas Laaksonen (Finalnd) and Kirril Kadukov (
Chinese Taipei’s Kuan-Lun Chen, who defeated Peacock at the Australian Youth Olympics in
Athletics Tasmania President, Brian Roe, said that he was impressed with the Eastern Suburbs thrower’s efforts,
“Qualifying rounds at world championships are often tougher to master than finals and by producing a personal best in his first experience at this level, Hamish has shown great competitive qualities.”
Roe said that whilst a medal was now a definite prospect, any position in the top eight would be an excellent result at this level of competition.
The top twelve athletes from the qualifying made it through to tonight’s (Thursday’s) final.
