PEACOCK STEPS ONTO WORLD STAGE

Young Hobart thrower and TIS scholarship holder, Hamish Peacock, tomorrow (Wednesday) faces the toughest test of his athletics career to date when he competes in the qualification round of the javelin at the IAAF World Youth Championships.

The Championships which are being held in Ostrava in the Czech Republic, bring together the best youth (under 18) athletes in the World and despite their relatively short history have already proven to be a breeding ground for champions of the future.

Peacock, with a personal best of 74.58m with the 700gm javelin, goes into the Championships ranked number four for the event on the world youth rankings behind the formidable Finn, Tuomas Laaksonen who leads this list at 78.62m.

Chinese Taipei’s Kuan-Lun Chen, who defeated Peacock at the Australian Youth Olympics in Sydney in January is ranked number two with 77.23m, whilst Russian Kirril Kadukov just shades the Tasmanian with a best this year of 74.79m.

The top twelve athletes from the qualifying competitions, in which each thrower has three attempts, make it through to Thursday’s final.
