MACFARLANE TO TRY HER LUCK IN EUROPE

Tasmania’s number one athlete, Donna MacFarlane, heads off tomorrow (Friday) for her first experience of European athletics.

The 2006 Commonwealth Games steeplechase bronze medallist will race three times over two weeks on what is regarded as the toughest circuit in world track and field.

Her aims will be twofold – to gain valuable race experience against her major rivals for the World Championships in Osaka in August, and to garner sufficient points to qualify for the World Athletics Final in Stuttgart in September.

And MacFarlane will have to be on her mettle from her first outing – an appearance at the Bislett Games in Oslo on 15 June. It will be the first time the prestigious meet, the first leg of this year’s Golden League has programmed a women’s steeplechase.

After having dropped from first to fifth on the world steeplechase ranking list, following some strong times at the meeting in Neerpelt, Belgium last weekend, the current Australian champion will be keen to build on her victory at the Grand Prix Meet in Qatar in May and quickly climb back up the ladder.

MacFarlane’s European programme includes a 1500 metres flat race in Karlskrona in Sweden on 18 June and a second steeplechase at Luzern in Switzerland at the end on the month.

She will base in Dusseldorf, where she spent time as an exchange student some years ago.
