Walk the Talk in Tunbridge

25 Jul 2011

Seventeen walkers converged on the main road of Tunbridge in superb conditions to contest the Tasmanian Road Walking Championships yesterday 23rd July.

In the absence of Daniel Coleman who is injured, the young male walkers were suitably impressive as they raced along the picturesque main street of Tunbridge in fine and sunny conditions. Louis Rose (14), Mitchell Walker (14) and Getasew Ferguson (13), raced the first 2.5KM together setting up a great pace.  Louis Rose, was impressive in winning both the U/16 5KM event in a personal best of 26.24 and the U/18 10KM event where also achieved a huge 3 min personal best in 56.32.01. Walker in his first contested 10Km event, came second to Rose in both the 5Km and 10KM events, setting personal bests. Ferguson, a talented young cross country runner and race walker also achieved personal best in the 3 and 5KM events, winning each age group.

Sophie Eberhardt, Rachelle Taylor and Tahlia Hunt, Tasmanian’s top female race walkers were slightly off their usual pace, as all three were suffering with the flu. Despite this all three girls showed that with good health will still be competitive come the Australian Championships in Canberra.

Race Walking in the young age groups was also well supported; ensuring the future for competitive race walking in Tasmanian is secure.
