DONNA – NUMBER ONE IN DOHA
Tasmania’s athletics supermum, Donna MacFarlane, has given herself a wonderful Mothers’ Day present, with a victory in the 3000 metres steeplechase in the IAAF Super Grand Prix Meeting in Doha, Qatar overnight.
In the Commonwealth bronze medallist’s first international outing for the year at her pet distance, she convincingly defeated a class field of Africans and Europeans to win in 9:34.47. Fellow Aussie, Victoria Mitchell was seventh.
The Hobart mother of two now possesses the three fastest times in the world for 2007, all three within just .5 of a second of each other – demonstrating a marvellous level of consistency.
The win gave MacFarlane a valuable 20 points towards qualification for the World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany in September, as well as increased confidence for her first assault on the European circuit in June and the World Championships to be held in Osaka, Japan in August.
