TASMANIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS TO END BIG SEASON

The Tasmanian Track and Field Championships to be held at the Domain Athletic Centre in Hobart this weekend (Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 March) will bring down the curtain on a big Australian domestic season.

All of the State’s top athletes, with the exception of Tristan Thomas who has missed the whole season with injury, will be on show.

Fresh from picking up her first national track championship in Brisbane last weekend in the 3000 metres steeplechase, Donna MacFarlane (TIS/Sandy Bay) will have quite a different weekend - opting to run the unusual double of the 5000 metres, in which she will face World Orienteering champion, Hanny Alston, and 800 metres against a field led by national under 23 medallist, Nicole Perry (North West).

Australian discus throw champion, Benn Harradine (VIS) will join the home state’s Graham Hicks (TIS/North West) in seeking World Championships and Olympic qualification in the men’s discus on Saturday evening, part of a feature session which begins at 4.00pm and contains many of the key senior finals.

Included in this session will be the women’s 400 metres, which for the first time in 2007 will be contested as the Lynne Mazey Memorial, named in honour of one of the State’s leading coaches, who lost her long battle with cancer in March last year.

After being forced to miss with a sudden bout of gastro, last week’s national 400 metres title in which she was favoured to medal, North West’s Morgan Whiley will be keen to finish the season on a high note with a victory over the distance.

Club mate, Melissa Kay will be a strong favourite to win the 100 metres, whilst their battle over 200 metres provide one of the most fascinating contests of the weekend.

In the junior events, much interest will focus on the performances of national under 20 champions, Hamish Peacock (Eastern Suburbs) and Todd Hodgetts (Newstead Harriers), both of whom will have full programmes over the weekend.

Peacock set a new state under 18 record and moved up the world age group javelin ranking lists with a throw of 74.58 metres in Brisbane last weekend during the National Youth Challenge whilst Hodgetts ventured into open company at national level for the first time. The State’s other under 20 national champion, Daniel Coleman (OVA) will be out to set a personal best in the senior 5000 metres race walk.

The Championships run from 9.00am to 7.00pm on Saturday and 9.00am to 4.00pm on Sunday.
