Graham Hicks wins another medal for Tasmania

Tasmanian Institute of Sport athlete Graham Hicks took bronze in Brisbane on the final day of competition at the Telstra Selection Trials and 85th Australian Championships.

Hicks’ best throw came on his first attempt and he sat in second place until Aaron Neighbour relegated the Tasmanian to third place on his final throw.  Hick’s performance of 56.87m was not his best of the season, but timely, in order for him to take home a national medal.

Huw Peacock threw a 10m personal best while stepping up in age group and implement weight in winning the Under 18 match hammer.  The 14 year old sent the 5kg chunk of steel 54.05m, the furthest by a Tasmanian with that weight this season.  The younger of the peacock brothers turned many heads on the national stage today, given he was dishing out a lesson in throwing to men up to three years his senior.

Peacocks performance also ads additional interest to the challenge thrown out by celebrity ‘has been’ Mark Worley who will go head to head with the youngster at next weeks Tasmanian Titles in Hobart.

Older brother Hamish Peacock was the pick of the rest of the Under 18 team taking bronze in the men’s discus with a throw of 54.61m.

At the end of competition, Tasmania finished 5th in the Under 18 state match, a brilliant result given the comparative number of athletes to choose from for team selection.

Overall team results for the Under 18 state match were;

1) NSW        301

2) QLD         240

3) VIC           221

4) SA           189

5) TAS         161

6) WA           112

7) ACT           72

Morgan Whiley returned to the track taking part in the heats of the 200m, but performing below her expectations.  Whiley was nearly hospitalised on Friday prior to the 400m heats, in which she was likely to win a medal.  Suffering from a 24 hour virus, Whiley was placed on an intravenous drip after losing serious amounts of fluid and it was a credit to her tenacity in returning to take part in the 200m.

Melissa Kay will have to wait until next year to prove herself as a force in Australian sprinting by winning a national medal.  Kay ran a Tasmanian record in January of 11.61sec for the 100m and was unable to replicate that form this weekend, but we have not seen the last of her.

All Tasmanian athletics fans will now turn their attention to the State Championships commencing next Saturday the 17th March in Hobart.
